PETER CROUCH could have been forgiven for striding off, bending down to eyeball Rafa Benitez and asking “Is that good enough?†Crouch has become increasingly frustrated on the Liverpool bench and is desperate to prove he is more than a bit-part player. Given a rare start last night, the England striker made his point by scoring twice. He helped Liverpool to establish a record Champions League victory on Benitez’s 50th Euro match in charge of the club. If the Spaniard decides to axe Crouch again for Saturday’s home game against Fulham, the 6ft 7in target-man might as well give up. It is no foregone conclusion he will keep his place. Benitez has made it clear Crouch is not one of his ideal starters. And with £21.5million record signing Fernando Torres returning to fitness, Crouch could find himself out of favour once more. Benitez was certainly not rushing to lavish praise on Crouchy — instead preferring to give credit to the strikers as a whole rather than individuals. Liverpool made the Turks pay in spades for that miserable defeat in Istanbul a fortnight ago. That 2-1 loss had put their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase in serious jeopardy. As well as Crouch’s double, there was a hat-trick from Yossi Benayoun, one from skipper Steven Gerrard and a late brace by substitute Ryan Babel. The Dutchman should have had a treble of his own but headed against the bar. With one point from their first three matches, the Reds knew they had to win each of their three remaining games to get through.
