View Full Version : Ireland v Brazil

Niall

The Republic of Ireland will face Brazil in a friendly at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, March 2.

International sports event promoter Kentaro has confirmed the London venue will be used for the game, which was announced late last year.

The fixture is something of a coup for Ireland, who will also face Argentina at the Aviva Stadium - the newly-revamped Lansdowne Road - on 11August.

The fixture was given to the Football Association of Ireland as part-compensation for the controversial 'Hand of Henry' defeat to France in the World Cup play-offs.

Ridiculous, who wants to travel to London just for a friendly even if it is against Brazil.

Dont think they had a choice. Fifa gave the game to an agency to organize and croker was too expensive origionally plus security etc. Last week the GAA reduced the rent but at that stage it was too late, the emirates was already choosen. From what I heard

If its anything like the friendly in Croke Park a few years ago most of the crowd will be asleep.

I reckon this will end up being fairly close to a sell out myself. All of Brazils previous games at the Emirates against Italy, Portugal and Sweden were sell outs

If it generates funds for the FAI,

which are used to invest in the game and our players ....

then I'm well pleased.

Won't be traveling to this one, myself.

If anyone can think of any chants or banners against sepp blatter for the match keep it clean please tryin to think of something good for the match I came up with

They dont care about Ireland
They just care about France
saepp blatter cheated Ireland and its fans
That is to the tune of the liverpool protest song against the yanks. If anyone can come up with anything better it would be much appreciated

Dont know much about either of these lads but I do hate the idea of playing players to "tie" them up. I'd much rather play Shane Long than Leon Best, or Paul McShane as bad as he is, I'd rather him than some blow in not good enough for England.

One example of this that really annoys me is Owen Coyle, he is constantly referred to as a "Scots man", how many caps to you need to fully change nationality?

So what do we reckon Trap will do about the strikeforce now Keane is playing?

I hope he does the right thing and leaves the team as he announced it yesterday and then introduce Robbie Keane from the bench for the second half.

No harm in giving Leon Best a full 45 mins to see how he gets on.

I see that tonight's match is also being broadcast on the entire UK ITV network. I never remember ITV covering a friendly like this before. Scottish TV opts out of showing the FA Cup games so it is really surprising the exposure this match is getting.

Our games are normally on the same nights as England friendlies but seeing as Englands match is tomorrow this is the marque game of the night, especially given the fact it's in London.

How that shovel head McShane continues to get near the squad is beyond me.

He is a terrible player, what does Trap see in him? The amount of mistakes he made tonight and his positioning at times was terrible. Every game he plays for Ireland or Hull he is guaranteed a couple of fcuk ups.

There has to be at least 8 Irish qualified centre backs better than him between the English Leagues and the Eircom League.

Played well in the first half second half wasnt great but in fairness Brazil are a quality side ya can always trust them to pull it together in a world cup year. As for the Ireland squad we are definately strong enough to qualify out of that group and Mccarthy looks like an exciting prospect. At the mo my preffered team would be

Given
Kelly St.Ledger Dunne O'Shea
McGeady Andrews Whealen Duff
Doyle Keane

Would be interested to see Lawrence in a more central role maybe instead of Andrew but I think McGeady could be key to unlocking some of the tough ties we have especially on our travels.
