I'm going to this one too and I was a bit worried about what kind of performance we were going to get, until last night!:D
I don't care who the opposition were, it can only be good for the team morale and confidence!

I wonder what odds you'd get for a 10 euro bet on Rafa picking the same team as Basiktas?
For a start I think Kuyt will be selected again. Maybe even Kewell on the left and Riise reinstated at LB.

Would like to see the team line out as follows:
Pepe
Finnan Carra Sami arbeloa
Yossi StevieG Masch Kewell
Crouch Torres
(Although that would be harsh on Voronin who was excellent during the week)
Let's believe we can push on from here and get a proper challenge going.

Thing is Torres is going to be heading off with Spain for the next 10 days anyway. We might as well get some use from Torres while we can cos he could just come back from international duty injured again

Nice to win ugly again.
We're only three points off the lead - not bad for a team supposedly in crisis.

yea, good win today. Still think we miss alonso a bit aswell as agger but a great performance from us.
I think its times like this when we can see the result of how rotation works..ie with babel coming off the bench. Imagine if we played our strongest team from the beginning forgetting injuries babel would have hardly played. Looks alot more confident now aswell and good to see more from Lucas.

Delighted of the win today.. hopefully this kick starts a run of good form again.. for all the crisis reports... we're not that far off the top teams... plus if that turns out to be our bad spell for the season, then I wont be too bothered considering we havent lost a game.
Watched, the highlights on RTE, delighted for El Nino, top top striker. Shows his class - on the pitch for a few mins and makes a major contribution. Mind you, I wanted to smack "the spanner houghton" for his analysis - sick of the negativity from the man... had to turn it off.
Come on the Pool.
Plus, good to see Danny Murphy back on the playing field. Was wasting his time at the over-rated Spurs.

just back in the door after a good day at Anfield!
Good team performance- kept pluggin away and were patient despite some poor first half passing and moving.
Risse was simply awful, and is surely in trouble for a place even on the bench now.
Thought aurelio fitted in well and arbeloa should rightly keep finnan out with another accomplished performance.
how good was sami today? looked so confident and broke things down well.
voronin was dissappointing despite some very good movement - his erratic finishing meant that he had to come off.
thank god for torres. he was born to play in the red jersey.
oozes class and could yet set up a fruitful partnership with crouchy.
benayoun was good and babel troubled fulham when he came on although his youth did show some poor decision making.
again, i cant overemphasise how good lucas looks both on and off the ball. gets around the pitch so quickly and gets in there. looks so promising for the young brazilian...
very happy with the result which pushes us back up where we ought to be (at least).
confidence is growing within the squad again.... :D
cmon the reds!

can't agree with you there mate,i'm not going to knock Arbeloa but a fully fit Finnan is by far a better Defender.
i thought he looked exhausted during the Besiktas Game and i'm glad Rafa recognised it.i for one am looking forward to a fully refreshed Finnan when he returns.....
Is it just me or is anyone else still buzzing after yesterdays result? Delighted with the result and some inspiration from Torres taking that goal. Hard to find fault with any player yesterday, but Sami, Masch, Stevie, Yossi and Voronin stood out for me big time. A bit mad that Setanta gave Torres man of the match when he was only on for 20 mins. Table looks very promising this morning - onwards and upwards from here!
Garrett
11-11-2007, 09:44 AM
Ah, Setanta & Sky both tend to award the man of the match to whoever scores the goal ... no real thought goes into it imho.
What's of concern, is that we had some seriously good chances during the match and didn't convert them into goals. If this does not change and quick, we are goosed ! .... we can't leave it all on the shoulders of Torres and yet, we need him playing if we are to have any chance.
I'm not yet prepared to start making references to how great we were at scoring goals midweek ... lets face it, that was unreal ... but also, almost something from fantasy land. We must be scoring goals from open play in every game ... and that, as of yet, we ain't doing enough of imho.
Good result given it was looking very dodgy with Fulham for sure, but we left it late and what if Torres had not come on, would it have been another 2 points dropped ? ... thankfully, we didn't find out :)

Delighted with the result but it was looking like we were going to drop more points at one stage which is worrying. We kept knocking on the door and great credit to the lads, especially the quick thinking of Nando to fool the keeper. We were a bit pedestrian at times. Yossi was good at times but kept drifting in when we needed him to stay wide. We miss Pennant's natural width at times. Don't like seein Riise left midfield and really hope Kewell gets fully fit as he has been looking promising recently. Babel seems to be growing in confidence the last few weeks and I felt he changed the game and gave us that injection of pace and urgency that we needed. His power and pace are phenomenal and he left the opposition for dead in the run up to the "penalty" incident. Hope to see him as Fernandos long term partner up front. Torres is obviously just a class act - brilliant goal and what a great attitude he shows all the time. Please play him as often as possible Rafa!

Great second half performance against a stubborn team, just shows the extra wee bit of class we were missing in Torres and how it makes us click and look like real contenders. One thing i think that is being overlooked is the contribution of Babbel his pace scared the life out of them, such a young kid his potential is huge, still a bit green with alot to learn but i really think he could be the real deal!
James
11-11-2007, 12:31 PM
I didn't think the result was ever in doubt and I was happy with the performance. We passed the ball well and created chances. Benayoun always looked a threat and I love having his type of player in the team. He might not offer the width that Pennant does but his intelligence is second to none and he has to start every game. If we can get Kewell and Babel fit the width issue won't be a problem as all 3 players are comfortable at interchanging.
I thought Gerrard had a good game and Masch did well after he settled down (which seems to happen regularly)
Aurelio too was solid and if he can get a bit more consistent with his crosses he will be our first choice left back for a long time. We play much better football on the left when he is in the team.
All in all a good days work.
Good result given it was looking very dodgy with Fulham for sure, but we left it late and what if Torres had not come on, would it have been another 2 points dropped ? ... thankfully, we didn't find out :)
I was thinking that to myself too last night. Setanta kept going on yesterday about how Fulham concede so many goals in the last 10 minutes, so you'd wonder if we could have actually done it without depending on Torres. Anyway, its irrelevant really now isn't it :p
Incidentally, I've noticed Torres hasn't been included in the Spain squad for the upcoming internationals which is fantastic news. The lad should be raring to go when we head to St. James Park.

that is a great spot, delighted with that, Rafa being Rafa, Fernando Torres must be a shoe in to start V Newcastle.
Last night showed torres's one track mind, the second he got the ball he had only one thing on his mind.Babel also looked lively and showed good strength in the lead up to the peno.Crouch though deserves a lot of credit for his link up play and attitude

Definitely an improvement on recent performances in the league but I agree we shouldve killed the game off before Torres came on. Nice to see us playing like that without Alonso, Agger and Kewell.
What a game, standing watching it from the kop i think we all went through every emotion, as soon as torres came on the kop lifted we all had a very good feeling bout this change. voronin deserves alot of credit he tried so hard to get the ball in the net and worked very hard,
crouch had some great link up's and as previously said a great attitude.
the only person who we spotted to be lacking was riise he seemed lazy at time, he was chasing as much as other, once he passed in the ball he didnt move much.
all in all the team played very well and we got the more important 3points.

Was at the game and overall happy with the performance but I thought our main problem in trying to break them down was that we were very narrow in midfield and attack. I think they were there to be stretched if we had used any bit of width.
Didn't think Stevie had a great game but Sami was back to his best. Babel frightened them when he came on by running directly at defenders. Riise couldn't put a foot right, even when swapped with Aurelio. Benayoun always looked to be making good runs and is very clever on the ball.
Voronin looked very good but came in for dog's abuse from two drunk Dubliners by us in the Anfield Road end. Every opinion was shouted out, including "If Rafa doesn't take this f***er off, he should get the sack too, that c**t is not good enough to wear the red jersey" Two scousers next to me were saying "there's too many f***ing Irish coming over here" and for once I didn't find it hard to understand them, embarassing... :o
