The current trend for gag reels was started by Jackie Chan when he included them at the end of his US movies in the early 90's. Producers noticed the great reaction to them and were also looking for 'extras' to stick on dvds. He had been doing this regularly with his Hong Kong movies but he had originally got the idea when he worked on the Cannonball Run with Burt Reynolds.
