FIFA president Sepp Blatter says the Irish have written to football's world governing body asking to be let into the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Henry handled the ball before setting up a goal on November 18 that put France into the World Cup and eliminated Ireland's team. wtf??
Please let this be a wind up Yes we were robbed by bad decision Yes there should be something done, (ie) Video Technology, more officals But we have to move on and get over it! Bad decisions happen all the time, it cost us alot but we need to learn from this Asking to go through as 33rd team is embarassing imo
Can't be true. Maybe the England 86 team should replay the Argie 86 team to see if England should have won that World Cup. Who's to say that is that goal had been disallowed, France would not have gotten another one or hockeyed us on pens. I was bullin for days after that match, however that's football and time to move on.
the article updated Fifa president Sepp Blatter says the Irish have written to football's world governing body asking to be the 33rd team in the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Ireland were eliminated from the competition on November 18 after Thierry Henry handled the ball, which set up a goal for William Gallas. This crucial goal gave France a 1-1 draw but a 2-1 aggregate playoff win, putting them through to the finals next summer. After the match, Barcelona striker Henry said Swedish referee Martin Hansson was the main culprit for not spotting the infringement. Ireland's players and fans were furious with the foul play. Blatter told a keynote address at the Soccerex business conference: "We received a delegation from Ireland at Fifa and they were naturally absolutely unhappy at what has happened. "They know the match cannot be replayed and the decision of the referee is final." He added: "Naturally they have not asked for any sanctions to be given to any player or the referee, but they have asked, very humbly 'can't we be team number 33 at the World Cup?'" Blatter said he will bring Ireland's request to the attention of the Executive Committee but was unable to say what would happen. An extraordinary meeting will be held in Cape Town on Wednesday. The draw for the 32 teams in the tournament will take place on Friday.
I dont care how we get there as long as we do, i know this is 100/1 shot but as long as there is hope you never know. Might still be good summer never know
I'd say the odds are significantly larger than that at this stage Getting tired of this story cropping up again and again. At the end of the day Ireland don't deserve to be at this World Cup having only beaten Cyprus (68th in the world) and Georgia (125th in the world) over 12 games. The world and most folks in this country have moved on, would strongly urge the FAI to do the same and concentrate more on getting their own house and league in order besides wasting time on chasing lost causes.
We are in danger of losing any neutral public sympathy if we continue with this crusade. The game is over, and unfair though it was, its time to accept we won't be at the world cup. Another PR disaster fror the FAI.
