Wonder how many we will have out through injury? City on a run of bad results also Come on you mighty reds !
International football has played a massive part in blowing apart our season so far, dread to hear what the news will be on Thursday morning. This was always going to be a big game but with the horror show that we've been going through in recent weeks its even bigger. With Johnson, Aquilani, Gerrard and Torres getting some well earned rest and rehabilitation hopefully this is the one where we really show everyone else what we're all about and get this season back on track.

Lucas, Kyrgiakos, Babel, Kuyt and Reina are the only players potentially involved this mid week I think. Not as bad as some international weeks for a change.

This game is absolutely massive. Not only is it another game were the press and everyone is looking for us to fall flat on our face it's a game against the pretenders to our throne. City will fancy snatching the 4th CL position and that is all we have to play for this season, surely.
This game could really shape not only this season but where we are going to find ourselves next season and in the future. We need a solid performance and quite simply a win against a City team packed with good players. We need to show them that they need to up a level if they want to break into the top 4.
I am terrified of this fixture and have given up making predictions. if we can get Aquilani, Gerrard and some time out of Torres we have a real chance. One thing for sure is Reina and the back four need to get a grip! I think Reina has been poor at times this term and this included flapping at both Birmingham goals and failing to cut out the Lyon winner at Anfield and their equaliser away.

Can't agree with that at all, he has been one of the few players that can take credit for his performances to date especially playing behind the back 4 in its current form.
The international break has come at the right time for us and if we can beat Man City and put a few consecutive wins together things will start to look a bit better.

I knew people would disagree with that and that's fine. I'm not saying he's a poor keeper only that he is suffering a drop in form and confidence like the rest of the defence.
I really think he could have defended/commanded his 6 yard box better for the Birmingham first goal. He was certainly found flapping for the second Birmingham goal, but it was a screamer. I think he lacked conviction in the 6 yard box against lyon for their winner and could possibly have done better for their equaliser over there!
Too often we have dominated position had numerous chances to take the lead and passed them up. Only to be hit with a sucker punch by the opposition who score with their first shot on target. Reina is certainly not over worked but I feel there is a confidence issue with him.
Reina is a great keeper and made some great saves against Lyon away and has been one of our more consistent players but there is room for improvement. if he starts commanding his box then maybe our back 4 will get a grip? Constructive criticism based only on the high standards Reina has set himself.

Rafa Benitez is confident of having Steven Gerrard, Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson fit to face Man City this weekend.
All three have trained well after sitting out international duty and should be available for Saturday's crunch fixture against Mark Hughes' men.
However, Benitez is likely to be without top scorer Fernando Torres.
He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Agger is okay. He had a small problem with his back but he's training. It was a very good decision from Denmark's manager (to withdraw Agger) because he is much better now. I think he'll be okay for the weekend.
"Johnson has been training. Not full sessions, but training, so hopefully he'll be okay for the weekend too.
"Gerrard is doing well. He finished a full training session today, so if he can carry on then he'll be okay as well.
"Fernando Torres is training with the physios, so I don't think he'll be available."
Benitez also had good news to report on hamstring duo Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera, who were originally ruled out for four weeks after pulling up against Birmingham on November 9.
The boss said: "I was talking about four weeks but they are working hard with the physios and doing special treatments. We have to check but maybe they'll be back earlier than expected."
Meanwhile, Benitez expects to have David Ngog available for our forthcoming fixtures despite breaking his nose with France U21s.
"We know Ngog has broken his nose but it's not serious," he said. "I am not sure yet because we haven't seen him but I think he'll be okay, it won't be serious."
Elsewhere, Fabio Aurelio - who could not accept a long-awaited call to the Brazil squad due to a calf injury - remains a concern.
"It's a pity because he was waiting for this call for a long time, then when he got the opportunity he had a problem," said Benitez. "He's improving but still has a little bit of a problem with his calf. It will be difficult for him to play against Man City."

Thats a decent looking team. I think Carra is clear to play.
Yeah its about time Aquilani got a start now. He's got a further 2 weeks training under his belt now and should be raring to go at this stage. Something different in midfield could be just the lift we need.
Big chance for Babel, looks like he'll get a run of games now with the injuries to others.
Anyone know anything about Aurelios fitness? I'd like to see him back in the team not that Insua has done much wrong. I think if we saw a back four of Johnson - Carra - Agger - Aurelio for a consistent run of games, results would quickly improve

YOSSI BENAYOUN and Albert Riera could be in line for a shock return to action this weekend after responding to radical treatment on their torn hamstrings.
The Liverpool midfielders were flown to Belgrade earlier this week to see Mariana Kovacevic, the physiotherapist who has become famous for curing injured sportsmen with liquid from horse placenta.
Both men were expected to be sidelined for between three to five weeks after they sustained the injuries against Birmingham last Monday.
But their condition has improved so much since seeing Kovacevic there is an outside chance of them being available for Saturday’s home clash with Manchester City.
Benayoun has been in outstanding form this season and he is quietly confident he will be back in action sooner rather than later.
“I have been in Belgrade to see her and I am feeling better already,” Benayoun confirmed. “My hope now is that I will be fit in one week, two at the most. I have a good feeling about it.”
If either of Benayoun or Riera were available after their special treatment it would be another huge boost for Rafa Benitez, who is getting close to having his strongest team available for the first time this season.
Though neither Fernando Torres or Fabio Aurelio will be available, Steven Gerrard, Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson are all expected to figure, while David Ngog should also be included despite breaking his nose with France’s Under-21s.
Ngog’s last appearance for Liverpool was shrouded in controversy after he ‘won’ the penalty that enabled his side to secure a 2-2 draw with Birmingham.
That incident, though, overshadowed what had been an encouraging display – he scored the Reds’ opener – and with Torres set to be sidelined, Ngog will be needed.
“Ngog has broken his nose, so we will have to see how he is before the weekend,” Benitez said today. “But we think he is going to be okay. It is not too serious.”
“Agger is training and we think he is also going to be okay for the weekend, which is positive for us.
“It was a very good decision from (Morten Olsen) Denmark’s manager (to withdraw Agger from their friendlies) because he is much better now. I think he’ll be okay for the weekend.
“Johnson did half a training session yesterday and looks much better. We think he should be fine for us, too.”
The return of so many key faces could not be better timed, as Liverpool are heading into a crucial run of fixtures and their manager knows he will need all hands to the pump.
“I hope we will ready as this is the start of an important week for us,” said Benitez, whose side face trips to Debreceni in the Champions League then Everton after City.
“The last game we played at home (against Birmingham) you could see we were pushing to win but we will need to do the same this weekend.”

Bridge has been absolutely awful this season.
His display against Burnley last week was really poor.
He should definitely be targeted.
Big game saturday morning and I am thinking there will be a few goals in this one. A win to build the confidence ahead of Debrecen, Everton & Arsenal. I have seen posts above about fancying babel against bridge but I have to say I am sure their fans will fancy Wright Phillips against Insua. I expect a performance United like and a Liverpool win.

I didn't exactly mean with Babel (you're right about that Bolton game, they had to sub Steinsson) but i meant he can be gotten at.
He struggles to deal with crossfield diagonal balls and his positional sense is very poor.
My Dad and brother are City season ticket holders and say he is definitely the weak link, also every time i see him play he doesn't impress me.
I think he is an accident waiting to happen,he made a name from being an English man with a left foot at a time when they had no quality left sided players and were playing Heskey wide left in the national team.
Around this time Steve Guppy and Michael Ball came through and had a good reputation too because they were left footed.
Bridge had hung around on the Chavs subs bench like a bad smell and now he is getting regular football in my opinion he is getting exposed as an average player.

Torn hamstrings cleared within two weeks is incredible.
Rafa Benitez today revealed how four of his injured stars could be fit for Man City after flying to Serbia for 'special treatment'.
Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun were due to be out for another two weeks with hamstring problems but could now feature on Saturday after the much-publicised journey to eastern Europe.
Benitez was so pleased with the treatment they received that he sent Fabio Aurelio and Glen Johnson to Serbia for work on their muscle injuries.
All four players are now back in Merseyside and have taken part in full training sessions for the past two days.
Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "You know people have talked about them going to Serbia for special treatment and that's true. We had a lot of reports of international players going there, so we sent some players.
"They are now training so we will see if they can play. They have trained for the last two days.
"It has been good. There are other names from different teams who have been doing this treatment for seven years.
"It is a curative program for players with muscle injuries and it works well."
The major injury headache confronting Benitez before the international break has now almost cleared, with Steven Gerrard, David Ngog and Daniel Agger all passed fit for City.
Fernando Torres is the only senior star still in the treatment room.
Benitez added: "He is improving. He had a plan of two or three weeks, he's following this and improving."

This game is there for the taking, City defence has been fairly poor all season and Adebayor and Tevez can't seem to score lately. Think they will start De Jong which will give them a bit more steel in midfield and defensively.
Happy to see Ngog start again, will stand to him all this game time while Torres is out and he is able to score goals.
Need a big game from Kuyt today as he has been poor enough recently.
Yossi will need to help out Insua on the left as can see City trying to get the ball to Wright-Phillips to take him on.
Lets the get the wheels back in motion.

Is auelio not fit at the moment, insua is frustrating the hell out of me at the moment! He's decent in defense and loves getting forward but his final ball is shocking! Think aurelio is a better option there if fit!
Also was Reading rafa's game notes and he mentioned martin Kelly as an injury concern, is this lad a first team player now, looks like a great player, at full back that is.
Confirmed team
Reina, Skrtel, Carragher, Agger, Insua, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard, Babel, Ngog. Subs: Cavalieri, Aquilani, El Zhar, Aurelio, Riera, Benayoun, Kyrgiakos.

yes we realise but aurelio had 1 freekick (overhit) and two corners - hardly enough to justify bringing him on. he even only hit the corners from one side! aquilani should have been used. FULLSTOP

Hopefully the FAI will come out and demand the match be replayed. Seeing as Stephen Ireland was offside for his goal and all.

We're just nervous as ****, everyone at the club is. The manager, the players everyone is lacking confidence. I think we just dropped back into our shell in the hope that we could see it out.
We also should've had a penalty.
The problem we have is that we've played reasonably well in our last two matches and squandered leads by being to open. Today we threw away a lead by being too cautious.

Exactly, confidence is low and we are very jittery. But we responded well at the end piling on the pressure and would have won it if anyone other than lucas had that chance at the end

Thats bit trite. We scored two goals. Missed a clear cut chance and really should've had a penalty.
Our problem is we have so many half fit players at the minute. We lost two more players in the first twenty minutes - one of whom Daniel Agger is one of our technically better players(technically good players obviously key to playing positive football).
Yet again we played most of the match with a different defensive foursome than the week before and looked brittle any time City played some football.

at two each we brought on a left back on left wing (free signing - tho a good signing) instead of bringing on our 20m attacking midfielder. im sorry but if this is not negative i dont know what is

Did Aurelio play badly when he came on or what?
I actually would've like to have seen Aquilani start alongside Mascherano. But I fail to see what Aurelio did really badly when he came on. I also fail to see how bringing on a central midfielder for a winger would've help us stretch the City defense.

i never said aurelio done anything bad - i just felt that this was not the sub that would win us the game. benayoun did not seem injured coming off - he seemed to sprint off so we didnt need to take a left winger off. im sure benny could have lasted the final 5mins ok. rafa was obviously being careful with him. i simply felt a more creative player like aquilani could have been much more effective as well as the boost it would have given the players and the crowd seeing our 20m signing coming onto the pitch.

I'm sorry but how is it negative? Aurelio showed against the mancs and in other games he can be a good attacking LM as well as providing cover for Insua and can deliver dangerous set pieces. I'm sure if Agger didn't have to go off we would of seen Aquilani for 20 minutes
I'm pretty sure Fabio was brought on today because Yossi pulled his hammy last week and had ran himself into the ground for 70 minutes today. That is unheard of from a player that had this injury the week before. I'm sure Rafa would only have used Yossi if he was forced to today. Therefore to prevent more damage to the player he was taken off. You can't bring a creative cental midfield player on to play on the left as the balance would have been all wrong imo.
The injuries and constant enforced changes each week are killing us. It is impossible to gather any momentum and it is clear at times the players are confused to who is meant to be doing what job with all the postional changes.
Still should of won it with Lucas's chance, two points dropped, still confident we will finish top 4 easily enough in the end.

Personally I'm more concerned about our defending than our ability to score.
I'm not set in stone for or against zonal marking. But why the **** were neither Kyriagos or Skrtel anwhere near Adebayor? Bloody hell. Really hope the obvious problem, the constant reshuffling of the defence since the start of the season, is at the root of it. Could also be a case that teams smell blood when they have corners against us and pile more bodies into the box than they might against teams with a better reputation.
I agree with the general consensus that this is one hell of a shite season so far.

Skrtel for the first time looked good in attack. Nearly scored in the first attack, then got in well for his goal.
Unfortunately I would blame him for both goals.
The first was in his zone when adebayour got to it, the second he should have poked out of play before tevez got the move going. Thats the kind of thing carra never ever gets caught out on. Injuries are really killing us. Just like the ireland match the other night, the 2 injuries limited our options in the second half.

I'm really disapointed with today's performance and of the course the result. What's even more worrying is a club like Liverpool's starting a player that would struggle in the championship. David Ngog is not Liverpool standard and wouldn't touch any of the big clubs bench ! It's a disgrace that he is our back up to Torres ! Disappointed with the result and performance today, we gave them to much time and space during the game. I thought Kuyt had a particularly poor game today, he has been struggling of late. Unlucky with 2 players subbed inside 20 mins but I never felt we would get the win when they equalised. Gerrard didnt get a strangle hold on the game, he only had 2/3 good bits of play. Ngog tries to hold onto the ball too long when at times a simple pass is on. I know he is only young but we need better cover than him for Fernando Torres. Hopefully next weekend the Derby could be the perfect game to g-up the boys and get a result to kick us on a run.

I think Ngog shows promise of being a good player but some times his final decision making could be better, but that will come with time!!
But you're probably right in that he isnt quite good enough to lead the line as a lone striker YET!!
Give the lad a chance though!!;)
We will find it very hard however to attract a world class striker because they will know that they are basically coming to play as a back up to nando!!
Especially after crimbo when most of the top strikers are gonna have one eye firmly on catchin their national flights to South Africa!
What we REALLY need is to be buying a player who will be challenging Torres for a place on the team (of course we all know thats NEVER gonna happen!!)

Strange day all round, we go ahead after a woeful (from both sides) first half, then the man who got us in front forgets how to defend and gifts them the first and then tries to see out a ball that was never reaching the dead ball line, quazimodo makes a mug of him and we go two down,(the langer was onside). Straight up the pitch, a glimpse of positivity and hey presto we equalise. The fact we retreated after the first goal is down to both the players and manager. There is a negativity at times about this team which undermines any good work going forward. Obviously low confidence has it's part to play aswell. The early subs were a blow but I think we had plenty of time to get to grips with the situation. Fabio came on because Insua isn't up to the job yet and the fact the greek was hobbling, so he might have had to slot in at the back.
Not our worst performance by a long way but where the hell was Stevie today, looked totally uninterested and was far too quite and before people say " he's just back from injury", so was Yossi but I certainly think he put more into the game than Stevie. And as usual dirk was a complete donkey, nowhere near good enough for Liverpool.

We were lucky not to be beaten again today. Had we not scored straight after the City second I'm not sure we would have gotten an equalizer. Having Aqualani on the bench and needing something creative is frustrating when you have Lucas and Mascher in midfield. Lucas missed a glorious chance at the death to pinch the 3 points too. I understand why Rafa brought on Aurelio - but dont understand how SWP outjumped our Greek Cyclops at the far post???
positives (if any) today - Gerrard's return. Arsenal and Villa both dropping points.

I think Carra has gotten over his slump and we need him and Agger (no luck at all) anchoring the defence. He'd never have let tevez get that ball it'd have been in row z.
Skrtel is not playing well at all. It's like the responsibility of being the more experienced (in regard to Liverpool career) centre back is weighing him down.

Stevie is having a shite season by his own incredible standards because he's used to Xabi playing quick, short, sharp passes to feet.Without Alonso in the side I've noticed him more and more dropping deep looking for possession.I rate him as the best all-rounder on the planet but if there is one fault with stevie it's his discipline in holding his position sometimes. He goes into captain fantastic mode and runs around like a headless chicken trying to do too much on his own.Unfortunately, when he does get the ball he's too far from goal, and theres a big gap between the midfield and lone striker-i.e.-the area of the pitch he should be occupying.Hopefully Aquilani's passing range will change all that once he's 100% fit.I adore Stevie as a player-Just an observation and a possible explanation as to why his form's dipped.

I'd agree with that 100%. We are big-time missing a playmaker in midfield to link defence and attack. The amount of long balls played from the back since Alonso left has increased because Lucas and Masch aren't confident enough in their ability on the ball. Consequently the service to the front men is too predictable with a lot of long straight passes. Gerrard has suffered as a result of this lack of service. Hopefully Aquilani can develop into that link man.
The rest of this season should be used to try a few of the younger lads out because there is a fair bit of deadwood who just haven't cut the mustard.
On the team selection issues Aurelio should start before Insua, whilst the form of Skrtel and Kuyt has been well below par. Kuyt in particular, whilst giving his usual 100% committment has been very poor this season.

when rafa sits down with his coaching staff and analyses the game will they look at the goals conceded gloss over them which seems to be happening and then move on to the next game because if a junior team continued to concede goals from set pieces i can assure you that the manager without the benefit of replays and seeing his team everyday for training would get it sorted.
it is smply not good enough that we continue with the zonal marking again a free header and no player on the back post fooking dreadful absolutley dreadful,do any of the coaches/players have an input into the way we defend or do they just turn there heads during meetings or stare at the ceiling in case they are asked a question and have not got the balls to tell the manager HELLO RAFA ZONAL MARKING IS NOT WORKING,i was never a fan of the zonal crap but has it got worse since pelegrini became involved as for stevie g his body language is of a player that is pissed off and at times he looks totally disinterested

agree regarding having men on the posts, I really find it inexcusable, mind you plenty of top clubs often ignore it
can't get over Adebayors goal. From where I was sitting I presumed a whistle had been blown cause our defense just stood still. Conceding a goal to Adebayor because he physically outjumps a defender is fair enough, but giving him an acre of space and having nobody on the posts is ridiculous.
I didn't think City were great today at all. Liverpool were vulnerable particulalry at left back but they hardly used Wright-Phillips pace at all. They crowded the midfield well though in the first half which highlighted our lack of creativity there. Mascherano was good today but himself and Lucas just don't work together.
Carras yellow card was ridiculous, his first foul of the game, a blatant dive and right in front of the linesmen.
I thought both teams were poor today. The standard of premier league football in general this season is poor. It says it all when the team at the top of the table can afford to carry washed up players like Deco and Ballack in their midfield and Darren Fletcher is seen as one of the most influential players in th league. Our team from last year would walk away with this years league....

Ah stamullen, mate, in fairness now, Reina can only do so much.
He's such a class act, but if you leave one of the most reputable forwards in the country to get a free header from 5 yards out then it reflects badly upon the defensive set-up (or lack of it), but not Reina.
Reina did all he could again today, and actually he played the best pass of the match himself, a long driven accurate pass to the right wing. It was magic.
Reina is the least of our worries, solid, reliable, consistant, unflappable. Its the rest of our defensive unit I'd be worried about, certainly not Reina.

Poor result, shocking performance.
It's like groundhog day at Anfield these days - zonal marking costs us yet again, strange/poor tactical decisions/substitutions by Rafa, the same players not stepping up to the mark week-in week-out and most of our supposed top players not performing either.
Both City goals were a joke defensively with Skrtel (twice), Kyrgiakos and Insua all at fault. Reina continues to be rooted to his line instead of coming for crosses. No players on either post continues to kill us. This is going on for over 2 seasons now, is this supposed to be top class coaching? It's just a running joke at this stage.
Aurelio brought on instead of Aquilani when a blind man could see City were walking all over us because the inept Lucas and Mascherano could not keep the ball?? Poor decision. Kuyt very poor again. Gerrard is lost as well - Aquilani has more creativity in his left testicle than Lucas and Mascherano put together, yet he's left on the bench. Gerrard is getting no supply and no chances and thus keeps having to drop deep to try and start something.
If City had anything about them they'd have beaten us well, 66% possession but could not pick a final pass time and time again. That said, had we anything about us, their defence was shocking. Another lucky equaliser to get us off the hook once more. Just not good enough, we're doing very little right at the moment.

We were only missing 2 first choices players today before the match started so this injury crisis nosense is starting to wear thin.
I can't believe how shocking we were today. They were there for the taking but we didn't grasp the bull by the horns again!!

And spending 20 million to leave a player rot on the bench when we need him more than ever is just ridicuous. He's gotta drop Lucas or Masher and start Aquaman every fcuking match!!
Any pre-match plan to put Aqualani on was pretty much blown out of the water in the first 20 mins when we were left with one change. I didn't think the Aurelio change was a poor choice at all given the circumstances
We're firing at 50% at the moment and with the amount of bad luck we're getting it's so fcuking difficult to watch

Wouldn't slate Rafa over the subs personally.Aquilani has played only 15 & 8 minutes respectively all season so to chuck him in the deep end and expect him to start such an important game against a quality side just wasn't feasible imo.Within the first 20 minutes we were desperately unlucky to make 2 forced substitutions-a winger and a defender. Then as time ticked away we only had one sub left-at the time SWP was beginning to give Insua a bit of a roasting and you could see Yossi was shattered having just come back from injury and played more of the game than Rafa would have liked.Fabio offered support for Insua as well as offering a threat going forward and with his dead ball ability so I could understand completely why Rafa brought him on.
I wanted to see Aquilani on the park as much as anyone and I've no doubt Rafa would have introduced him had he not been forced into using up his substitutions earlier in the game so I don't want to see or hear any of this "bizarre" or "baffling" bollox in tomorrows papers regarding the subs today.

Will someone tell me how Kuyt finishes every fcuking match???He was fcuking brutal again today and I am fcuking sick to the back teeth of Rafas refusal to take him off or drop him!!(
He is badly out of form but he is not alone on that score, I will tell you why he finished the match today in my opinion
1- we had two subs used early on
2- yossi is just back from injury and was obviously not able for the full game
Regarding Aquilani im sure he will be played as soon as things and the player himself are ready, i will trust the manager and staff who see him every day

That's a fair point but what about all the other times.
He always stays on no matter what.I'm just sick of it at this stage.
I'll always support him when he's on the pitch and encourage him but enough is enough. Some else deserves a run on the right now.

James, I'm a huge fan of kuyt, but hes been going through a rough patch lately. So have others, it happens.
But when you say drop him, who would you pick on the right instead mate?

I would have Benny or Babel out there and I know I'll get slated for picking Babel ahead of him but Babel never got a consecutive run of games out there.Kuyt has been awful for ages. Can't control the ball, pass it 2 yards, pass a defender, cross a ball.
And before anyone brings up what he did last season that's in the past.
He's been hiding in certain matches too when we need all our experienced players to lead us out of this rut.
That's just my opinion bud.

Basically because Rafa chose the negative substitution over the positive one yet again. Yes SWP was roasting Insua (who hasn't roasted Insua this season? Nightmare defender) but the main reason for that was because Ireland and co had an unlimited supply to SWP. We needed someone in the centre who could pass and hold on to the ball to stop us being over-run, and also to give us a platform going forward, but instead Rafa chose Aurelio to protect Insua. Aurelio did ok when he came on but it was hardly a substitution to win the game
For Aquilani today, read Andy Reid for Ireland, for Masch and Lucas read Andrews and Whelan - same situation and idea. I hope Insua doesn't turn in to another one of Rafa's pet projects like Kuyt because he should be nowhere near the team, not Liverpool standard or even Premier League standard at all.

Thats fair enough lad.
For what its worth I cant see any point in picking a left-winger in Babel on the right wing.
And I think Rafa really loves Kuyt for his defensive duties as much as his attacking ones. If you have Yossi (or babel) in front of Johnson then the entire wing is wide open to any decent left winger on the other team.
Or thats how i'd see it anyway.
Thats not to say i'm right, just my 2 cents worth

i would not mind anyone else out there in particular some one who will saty out there and not keep drifting in and leaving gaping holes and no outlet - babel is always put out to the left id like to see him when fit out there for a run of games but wont happen
