The French TV station, TF1, are playing hard ball with the FAI/RTE after they sold the rights to Saturday's match in Croker to the rival French TV station, M6, for €4.4m.

This really p*ssed off the French Football Association, as they have an arrangement with TF1and expected the FAI to sell the rights to their favourite TV station.

No need to worry, a deal will be done

Roll on Paris, here we come - need to get some training in on Saturday!

Could be a replay of 1997 all over again when the 2nd leg against Turkey wasn't aired either so a precedence has been set already that RTE will play hardball and won't pay over the odds. If we win 2-0 on Saturday night the FFF should come back and demand €3m :)

Of course, RTE could just tell Pat Kenny to fcuk off for 2 years and that would free up the cash to pay up now

was listing to some tv3 lad who buys the sports tv rights and he was saying that it could happen whereby sky will be the only channel to get the rights but under legislation that came in a few years back sky cant show the game unless its been shown free to all in the domestic market

interesting what he was saying, he said that some french company bought the rights for €5m but that they where selling tv adds to a population of 60m+ while in ireland there are only 4m of us yet they are looking for €1.5m

biggest problem he was saying was that if a deal is sorted say on monday it only gives them 48hours to sort advertising deals while normally the sell it 6 weeks in advance

I was looking through RTE Guide and SKY listings today and there is no mention anywhere of the away leg on Wednesday. I

It is not on RTE or SKY Sports. That can't be true can it..................

im afraid it is true,

FFF looking for €1.5m none of the irish tv company's will pay it

A deal would want to be done by tomorrow otherwise RTE and the rest will argue that there is no point as its too late to sell off advertising slots. The FFF were seriously fcuked off at the FAI selling off the rights to the game last night to a pay tv company rather than their preferred channel TV1. Playing hard ball now because of it. If no deal is done the Woolshed will be swarmed by 4pm on Wednesday :D

This is mad ...

When I see some of the crap RTE waiste money on (*cough*PAT-KENNY-€600kpa*cough*) I just cannot accept that they won't write a cheque for something as important as this.

...Just let RTE, TV3 and Sly Sports all chip in to buy the rights between them, then they can all broadcast it ..... there's gonna be plenty of interest in this game, so they'd all get decent viewing figures, but could share the costs etc.

Trap said in metro this morning that we only need 1 goal and that he will be cautious not to concede as this would 'finish the game'

Can see this being very tight game but we cant give them as much space as we did second half on Saturday. We need improvement on set pieces also.

We do only need 1 goal to force extra time, but on Saturday I couldnt really see many oppurtunities that we had, bar Doyle and his blaze wide and few half chances

Impossible is Nothing

Lawerence should have buried that chance in the first half and Whelan should have buried the one in the second (Great save by the keeper). O Shea also had an excelletn chance. Think they were all better than half chances.

I expect Trapp to be cautious, I would not even be suprised to see the same team line out. We know we lack quality on the ball in central midfield, but who will replace them out of the current squad.

Only change I can see is McGeady in for Lawerence or if there are injuries.

Before the first leg I didnt think we could, but the amount of chances we created the other night, I think we have a real chance. get a goal and the pressure on them will be unbelievable and we are the only ones that have an advantage with the away goal. i think we played some of our best stuff under trapp when we were chasing a game - like away in bari...albeit against 10 men there. i think he'll keep it tight fir the 1st 15 or 20 minutes coz i expect the french to come at us early on to get the 2nd goal, esp witht he crowd behind em. if we can do that i think we've a chance of nicking it, alnos definitedl froma set piece coz we just create nothing from open play, dont really have the palyers to. but our setpieces are excellent usually so its our best chance. when we score early and try to defend it, thats when i get twitchy cos we keep giving the oppostion 80% of the ball and they eventually score themselves. i'd like this to go to penos, reckon the french would crumble under the pressure...and we have shay given

Whats not to like (aside from all the shite about Reid)?

He took us from the shambles we were under Staunton and has us within 90 (or 120) minutes of a World cup if we can perform.

We arent Brazil and I think if people are fair you have to say that players like Whelan is twice the player people were giving him credit for when he was brought in.

We were very unlucky to lose the game 1 nil on Saturday night and he is building a team. Okay if we dont get there, our seeding will hopefully have moved on a bit and we will have a better crack at the Euros

If its scoreless with 15 mins to go I'll be delighted but can't see the French not scoring tonight, think our best hope would be to go through on away goals after 90 mins. Can't see that happening either though so expect a game with more than a few goals tonight with France ultimately going through.

The Irish team played really well with a lot of heart and almost pushed the French all the way... Henry used his hand but it happens in football, it's not the first time, if Keane was in the same position would he have let the ball run out? He used his hand a few times himself. Should McShane have cleared it before it got to Henry?

First of all I am not having this UEFA,Platini, ref shit. Thierry Henry cheated us, not the ref or linesman. The same linesman gave us a very marginal off side and the ref refused them a very strong penalty claim.

We played as well as I have ever seen Ireland play but we have come up short. If McShane had attacked it or Given had come off his line like Loris done all night we may well be heading to south africa. That rule they have for the Europa league would have saved us.:(

Haven't read the other posts tonight, but all i can say is that i am a proud Irishman tonight, they played so so well tonight, yes Mcshane could have done better but still Henry's handball was so so bad. Yes, probally if Keane did it i would have a different point of view just as the French probally have with Henry's handball. What i didn't like was Henry sitting beside Dunne at the final whistle, just f**k off to the dressing room and don't be rubbing it in. I always had the utmost respect for Henry up until now.

It is a long time since I have been as mad as I am tonight. It wasn't like it was accidental (even if it was it shouldn't be allowed anyway); Henry clearly palmed the ball over the face of the goal.

I don't blame the referee as there were several players which most likely blocked his view but the linesman should have spotted it. If there ever was a case for Video Technology, we have it tonight; it was such a critical decision that robbed a team of a place in the World Cup.

Bottom line is we didn't take our chances in normal time - the Duff and Keane 2nd half chances in particular. Thats what it boils down to - not what Henry did. We should have been out of sight in normal time.

But at the end of the day football will not learn from rugby and other progressive sports that have introduced the video referee for crucial calls - like tonights. Because both FIFA and UEFA are rotten to the core and if a video referee had been in place for tonights game then France, home of the UEFA president, could have gone out on penalties. Now that is sick.

They already rigged the playoff draw and got 3 of their 4 seeded teams through to the finals - and Russia just blew it.

Well done boys in green - they have it a great shot.

In the words of Trapattoni we played a 'very very great a game' tonight. The spirit and belief the team showed tonight was off the charts, it was great to watch and I am proud of every one of them tonight for the effort and character they showed under such pressure.

In regards to Thierry Henry, its a disgraceful way for a World Cup Play-Off to be decided by such actions. The 1 meaningful thing Henry did for 210 minutes in the tie was control the ball twice with his hand before setting up the French equaliser. I hope he comes out and holds his hand up & apologies for his actions because kids all over the world idolize Thierry Henry and look up to him for the undoubted World Class player he has been over his career. He has gone down in my estimation tonight.

I said it when the play off draw was made, I said it after the Croke Park leg of the tie and I will say it again now. France were there for the taking, they struggled in their group and they struggled in the play-off. Any half decent side they faced gave them problems (France 1-1 Serbia, France 1-1 Romania, France 1-1 Ireland), I dont think the French are much cop at all and again I am gutted we arent going to the World Cup in South Africa. France may well get knocked out in the groups at the World Cup cause teams will fancy their chances against them. As for Domensch, how can you leave a player of Karim Benzema's undoubted quality on the bench for both games. Gignac is nowhere near Benzema and I for one am surprised he was selected.

Overall, I am gutted we didnt progress to South Africa after our performance tonight, we were absolutely brilliant tonight. Respect to each and every one of the players tonight, the team as a whole were fantastic. Onwards and upwards now, European Championships Qualifiers, I expect us to build on this and get ourselves back on the main stage at a major footballing event.

Well, we go out, but we can certainly hold our heads up high and be proud.

The lads played well, with good tempo and created the better scoring chances. Irelands goal was well worked, not sure if Kilbane actually meant that pass as good as it was to Duff, but Duffs pull back found an unmarked Robbie who slotted in well.

Ireland created more chances, Robbie had two which he could have scored from, Doyle had a heading chance from close in which was only 'put-off' due to some attention from Gallas, and Duffer should have scored when on a one-on-one through on the goalie. Although Given was hardly troubled in the 90, France were sniffing around.

But the way we went out is very dissapointing indeed. First of all, I am on record over the years to be a hater of cheaters, and I seldom use the hate word for anything. I think football has been far too lenient on divers and those that handball and other forms of cheating, short pulling, etc. There is no deterrent. We could use video refs during the match but also have a deterrent of post-match, with lengthy bans etc.

So Henry cheated, no doubt. Was it instintcive as some would say, well, to a certain point yes, but only as instinctive as Robbie handled the ball a few times during the match, so it was handball nonetheless and intentional, no doubt about that.

Also it looked as if Squillaci was offside.

But we made mistakes for that goal that we also have to put our hands up to. Poor Paul McShane has had a hard time in many matches. And in this one he was letting the ball go past him and out only to see Henry cheat it back in. Kilbane was also complicit as he was on the wrong side of Gallas and ball-wathcing. 102 caps or not I have been a regular critic of Kilbane. So we did have faults.

Poor Shay Given, to see Henry handle it right in front of him, Shay didnt then react as he normally would, and altough at no fault perhaps would have done better if it was normally put back in.

Overall, we can be proud of the performance, the way we played was the right way to play football, and although we did create chances and open chances, we didnt put them away. France are a vulnerable team at the moment, in many ways disjointed and wityh problems at the back. I agree with Jum Beglin, there should be retrospective punishment., I agree with Dunphy, Henry is a cheat. I dont agree with Souness, that players all do it. They dont.

That game is definitely going to have a bearing on how football is going in the future after that shit. The most blatant handball ive ever seen to result in a goal that robbed a team of a chance in the World cup is a cancer that henry will have on the rest of his life.

Hope he feels it was worth it(some will say it will be forgotten) because the great career and joy that man brought to football will be destroyed by tonight, not because of the simple intuitive thing he done, but by the fact he robbed far more deserving players the right to play in the world cup.
