The Irish Independent: Saturday 17th October (Weekend Review Pullout)

The Dream Team That Dunphy Didn't Rate

    1. Peter Schmeichel (Man United/Denmark)
'With his self indulgent histrionics, he's a big blonde baby in a man's world'

    2. Rio Ferdinand (Man United/England)
'Ferdinand is a clown, a tramp'

    3. Jaap Stam (Man United/Netherlands)
'Stam is a source of defensive insecurity, clumsy himself and lacking mental poise'

    4. Luis Garcia (Liverpool/Spain)
'Liverpool should put Garcia where he belongs..in the dustbin'

    5. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool/England)
'Gerrard's been found out tonight. A nothing player'

    6. Liam Brady (Juventus/Ireland)
'He is often looked on as a great player. He is nothing of the kind, his performance was a disgrace, a momument to conceit adorned with vanity & self indulgence'

    7. Eric Cantona (Man United/France)
'He always rises to the small occasion. He has an ugly petulance'

    8. Michel Platini (Juventus/France)
'A good player, not a great player'

    9. Cristiano Ronaldo (Man United/Portugal)
'A puffball. Will never be a player as long as he has a hole in his arse. Ronaldo is a disgrace..a disgrace to professional football. This fella is a cod. A modern day brat.

    10. Niall Quinn (Sunderland/Ireland)
'Quinn is a creep. The man is an idiot, a Mother Teresa'

    11. Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea/Ukraine)
'The big problem for Chelsea is Shevchenko, he's just a waste of space, thats £30m down the drain'

    Manager: Jose Mourinho (Chelsea/Portugal)
'We'll all see through Mourinho. We'll find out he's just a Bengal Lancer. Mourinho is poisonous.

I think he said that the night we played Barcelona. I know its a truly outrageous statement.

He has slated a lot of big names in European football over the years in his Dream 'Didn't Rate' Team!

I have to be perfectly honest, I would be the complete opposite. There is no doubt he thrives on being outrageous and plays to the gallery but very often the analysis is more interesting than the match itself when Dunphy is on.

Whilst he spouts some amount of drivel to be sensational, it beats listening to mundane comments from Trevor Steven, Kenny Cunningham, Alan Shearer etc.

we would all have more respect for Dunphy if he said he was wrong. If on a champions league night he said you know Bill i was wrong about Ronaldo,he is truly gifted or Rafa isnt a chancer.

He is like the Drunk in the pub who knows he is right and really doesnt have a clue. The time him and Giles when discussing masch said there was no such thing as a defensive mid or tactics was hilarious. Two fot he greatest dm of all time play for argentina and still these guys are the experts.

When we signed Mascherano it took a while for him to get going and Dunphy couldn't find enough words to slate him. Since he's become good tough Eamonn hasn't had anything to say about him.

Carra as well. His exact words "doesn't cut the mustard Bill"!

Said today we are out of the title then at the end of the interview said we have to win on Sunday to get back in the title race.

I felt sorry for Shevchenko at Chelsea, a hell of a player in his day, a true world class striker.

The defensive midfielders thing is understandable as he is just lamenting in many ways the demise of the great all rounder midfielders(Souness, McMahon, Robson, Keane or whomever) and as such the demise of the 4-4-2 formation.

But that tactics thing is self evidently retarded. Getting "great players" into the positions were they can be most effective is in itself as tactic. As is how you defend set pieces or attack them. Whether you place emphasis on getting the ball wide and putting in crosses or playing through the center is another tactic. Playing your best eleven every single match for eternity is another tactic. And combining all these little bits of tactics would form the basis of a footballing system. I mean **** sake how stupid can you be?

Also I believe he(dunphy) never rated Patrick Vieira. I remember him saying something to the effect that "Vieira's influence on Arsenal has been overrated"

In fairness to Dunphy he does say controvercial things in the heat of the moment that come back to haunt him but he is entertaining. No bullshit & says it as he see's fit.

The biggest hypocrit ever though! I remember him saying how Hypia was passed it & that his leg's were gone a couple of season's ago. Then I read in today's star how he reckon's we're missing Hypia & uses last season's match at Old Traff to back up his point!

    Funny stuff!
