After 3 defeats on the bounce with hardly a decent effort on goal, I think its fair to say we need a win. In saying that I would still leave Gerrard and Torres out of it and protect them for the biggest match of a generation on Sunday.

Reina
Johnson Agger Carra Insua

Babel Masch Lucas Riera

Benni
Kuyt

Hopefully if the 2 lads are fit we can stick them on the bench and leave them there :)

The preassure inside Anfield will be unreal i think. Lyon are a good team, and will be interesting to see how the lads handle this much preassure especially if Stevie and Torres are not starting.

This is a massive game for us now. Realistically the Champions League should be our focus now because i don't envisage us winning the League from this position. If Torres and Gerard are fit they have to play. It's unthinkable that we could lose 4 games on the spin, however Lyon are a good side and should we draw or lose this one then we are under real pressure to qualify from the group.

Lisandro is still out injured I think which is a boost for us, he's class,. This is a must win,. But so is the Sc*m game, if we lose to them we are 10 points off, if we beat them we are 4points behind and with some momentum, and the toughest games behind us, this month was always going to be a nightmare.

EDIT: Gerrard and Torres should start, try and in the game early and then take the off and give them a rest for the Sc*m.

Steven Gerrard has been in training with the Liverpool squad today, ahead of tomorrow's home game with Lyon.

The Liverpool skipper missed Saturday's defeat at Sunderland with a groin problem picked up on international duty last week.

But today's news is positive and he is expected to play in tomorrow's Champions League clash.

Fernando Torres, however, did not take part in training as he tries to recover from the adductor injury that he suffered while playing for Spain.

Liverpool FC’s Albert Riera to undergo scan to determing hamstring problem

ALBERT RIERA has dealt Liverpool a fresh injury blow – as Rafael Benitez revealed the Anfield outfit will not ask for Saturday’s controversial defeat at Sunderland to be replayed.

Riera will undergo a scan to determine the extent of a hamstring problem suffered during training over the weekend.

The Spaniard was an unused substitute at the weekend and is definitely out of tonight’s Champions League visit of Lyon.

Liverpool are hopeful the damage is just a pull and not a tear, which could rule Riera out for a significant period.

But the winger is almost certain to be absent from Sunday’s Premier League encounter against Manchester United.

Better news came in the form of Alberto Aquilani, who is being tentatively slated for a return to action in tomorrow’s reserve game against Sunderland.

Benitez admitted yesterday Liverpool had initially expected the Italian to be available in mid-September until further assessment of his ankle injury following his £20million arrival from Roma.

Aquilani has now started full training

alongside his new team-mates and could make his senior debut before the end of the month.

“We knew that Aquilani could be out for a month but afterwards, after seeing the scans we realised it would be more,” said Benitez. “But we knew that we were signing the player for five years not just for five games.

“Today I was really happy watching Aquilani on the pitch, talking about how good he was with the ball and maybe in two or three weeks he will be ready and make the difference.”

I sit between Manc fans all day in work then I come on here to speak to fellow Pool fans and I have to read this garbage. Some of us are very proud to have Fernando Torres play for our team. He's scored some fantastic goals, he's great to watch and he never let it be any secret that he loves to play for LFC. His head has never been turned by City, Chelsea, Barcelona and so on but he's been loyal to the club when he could have left us for more money, glory etc. Next time he refers to himself as a scouser I for one will remember more than the previous 10 days when he couldn't play because he's been injured. I for one think there isnt much wrong with him but Rafa wont risk him because of the United game this Sunday. He should be ashamed of himself and ashamed to call himself a scouser? I still can't comprehend that a Liverpool fan could make such a comment

He didn't play for HIS country that's the point Trucker is making. He was on the bench last wednesday but fit to play according to the Spanish FA yet came back injured to Liverpool. He clearly wasn't fit due to the injury the previous weekend so he should have been back getting treatment in Melwood since last Sunday not sitting around a hotel in Bosnia all week. Surely common sense should apply??

I'd probably pick N'Gog up front with *shock horror* Voronin in behind. He has performed decently when on the pitch and I think in a more tactical European game he could do a job given the injuries to Torres and Riera.

Also, like him or loathe him, I don't think Lucas, for fitness sake alone, should start every game.

I don't think we can risk starting the game with Voronin & N'Gog as the top two. Neither would frighten Lyon and I can never remember them playing together as a pair.

I can see him putting Benni out left, Babel out wide right, Kuyt up front on his own with Gerrard back in his normal position.

Lucas and Masch then to sweep up behind. That formation should put Lyon on the back foot from the off!

That's certainly what I would expect to see and I hear your point re. utilising such a strikeforce in a key game.

I would still think Voronin would have more impact than Bable but of course he can really only play in the 'Gerrard position' and therefore is limiting our options.

The youngster comes in for the injured Glen Johnson as Rafael Benitez's makes five changes from the side that lost to Sunderland at the weekend.

Liverpool: Reina, Kelly, Insua, Agger, Carragher, Mascherano, Lucas, Gerrard, Kuyt, Benayoun, Ngog. Subs: Cavalieri, Voronin, Aurelio, Babel, Skrtel, Spearing, Plessis.

I think Kelly's done very well for the England U -20 team and when he was out on loan he played right back a lot. Huge night for him. Our bench really shows how those pr1cks have failed to back Rafa. Worried bout tonight. I would have started N'gog though. Don't like Kuyt up front on his own at all and don't think Babel can hold the ball up.

Good to see Agger back, we need him and the skipper should give us a lift too. Come on reds!

+1

the yanks are a big problem.sadly winning things is now about who has the most money....

however, i've not flickered in my belief Rafas handling of the money he's been given has been very poor,(bar torres whom stevie wonder could've bought!) whether thats down to the scouts or not i dont know, but selling alonso while on the brink of the league was idiotic. Selling a decent & settled defender in arbeloa was stupid, yes johnson is decent goin forward, but defensively he's not up to much, therefore rafa didnt do what was so obvious last summer> BUY A STRIKER ..he let go/sold both crouch & his replacement keane!

another Liverpool game, another foul temper for me....

Poor result tonight but on a positive note Gerrard and Torres should feature in the rest of our champions league fixtures 3 out of 3 is possible,we know we are atrocious at the moment but lets hope they find that passion that is severely lacking at the moment,Ngog didnt do it for us, Yossi had fire in his belly and looked a class apart,Carragher didnt pick up the man for the first or second goal, insua struggled alot.We have to move on now and hopefully the intensity with United will give the players a lift and hopefully Benitez gives them a good kick up the arse, they need a result Sunday to take some of the the pressure that will be heaped on them over the next few days off.

Extremely disappointing, we let them dictate the second half at our "house".

All the different people/groups involved at the club have to share the blame, but some of the lesser players playing tonight really need to step up, when Nando,Johnson & Gerrard aren't there and also when they are there.

How we do on Sunday will give us the clearest indication of where we as a team and individuals are at this season.

I don't care about winning the League, getting Top 4 should be the main priority at this stage.

Onwards and upwards.

Benitez needs a kick up the arse himself! before anyone says it I'm not in the "rafa out" brigade or anything, I think he's a good manager but he needs to do some serious thinking

It's very depressing. On one hand I feel sorry for Rafa as we were brilliant last year and all we needed was proper investment from those two pr1cks to kick on and win the league with utd weakened this year

On the other hand some of his decisions are ridiculous. What the fcuk was my little pony coming on for our best player with 6 mins to go. Some players are playing like they don't care enough. It's possible Rafa has lost some of them. Mascherano looks like he is dreaming of Barca. Whatever has happened to Skrtel and Carra I dont know

Rafa also has to take the blame for us not having a forward when Torres is injured. It was his decision to sell Keane without bringing in a replacement. There are too many average players in the squad and obviously we rely too much on our two top players

I hope Rafa turns it around as I love him. History would suggest he will. 4 defeats in a row doesn't lie though and people are right tio be angry. I really fear for the team at the moment

Ya thats true but lad we dont even look like a team out there. Theres something rotten at the club

Been through it before fermoy, keep the faith we may not look like a team out there, but we'll comr through this as we have before.

I use to be the o e slagging off the manager and team, but there's knowhere else to turn now, unless we can sell the club and spend big in january.

Rafa has lost the plot....Carra needs to be dropped for his own good, hes poison this season. Were 2nd to every ball. Funds needed in January to sign 2 decent players, a winger and striker.

+1

however, i've not flickered in my belief Rafas handling of the money he's been given has been very poor,(bar torres whom stevie wonder could've bought!) whether thats down to the scouts or not i dont know, but selling alonso while on the brink of the league was idiotic.

Alonso wanted to go FFS, and we were screaming out for more attacking fullbacks. I;ve no problem with people having teir own opinions on stuff but I;m sick of reading such shite when I;m already in a poxy humour

the way the club is been run is a joke, and nothing seems to be changing, between rafa and the yanks they are making mistakes, (well the yanks more so) ive got a really bad feeling its going to get worse, but in the long run it might be better for the club, cos something has to change

it's hurting alright. Carra was nearly crying there. Cannot see us qualifying. rafa your negative tactics and subs have cost us dear.

Dont get me wrong I love Carragher but caught napping for both goals tonight,in fairness to him a poor general defensive display made him look bad,but we are giving away really cheap goals and that fighting spirit that seemed to drag games from a loss to a win is gone, but we are getting no luck, please wait til we play Utd Sunday and if they cant find heart then, well most of the comments here can be justified but give them til Sunday

I think the only positive from today was Kelly. Looked a decent player. Maybe one answer is to give him a chance at right full and push Glen into right side of midfield? Cant be any worse than we are at the moment. Maybe push carra left full and let Skrtel and Danny develope an understanding in the center

yeah gav i think thats the more worrying thing,no proper reaction, supposedly the worst run since 87/89 not sure i heard it properly as i had steam coming out my ears :D ,had we played really well and lost i think it would have been something we could of took on the chin but apart for say 20 mins of the game we were void of ideas, when we looked like we were getting on top confidence just went from the side with a couple of attacks from lyon,it was really sad to watch, the crowds reaction to yossi coming off said it all.

Rafa out brigade really out in force tonight. Personally, I thought we did enough for a draw. I also thought Ngog did a decent job up front. Held it up quite well and could have scored with a bit more composure. He's a young lad and he'll come good!!

I'm a Rafa fan through and through but Voronin for Benayoun has me completely stumped. Can anyone give any kind of an explanation for that because I can't!!!

Central Midfield is killing the team. Nothing goes through them and anything that does ends up overhit or a sideways pass. I know its not in vogue to slag Lucas, but in my opinion he often runs near a opposition player so the ball will not be played to him. Masherano had it twice tonight and Lucas could of made a forward run, instead he ran to Lyon player. Maybe his instructions are to hold but its fckin poison playing with two players with zero attacking threat in centre midfield at home. Johnson has been our best attacking outlet all season. Maybe once Aqualini gets in there we will see some quality in central midfield.

I normally don't post with any negative comments after we lose but i think tonight is a massive eye opener on the standard of players who are playing for the club. While i thought Martin Kelly had a good game and Pepe was his usual brilliant self there was at least 4 or 5 players who just don't cut it at this level and are seriously bringing us backwards instead of forwards. We are now in the middle of a serious crisis after losing 4 games in a row for the first time in 22 years. I could take losing against Chelsea & Sunderland but tonight was an absolute shambles, when we really should have won this game comfortably after their most important player Cris went off injured we found ourselves gradually getting trapped inside our own half and booting balls up to Ngog who will probably get a lot of stick but was left up front on his own and really didn't have much of a chance. When Rafa put on Voronin instead of our most creative player Benayoun you could actually hear the audible gasps from the crowd who must have thought the manager was losing his marbles. Sunday's game against united is now make or break, win it and we can get some form going but lose and we will be 10 points behind them and surely out of the title race. I still believe that with Torres, Gerrard, Pepe, Yossi ,Mascherano and Aqualani (when he is ready) in the first 11 we can beat anyone but without maybe 4 of these players we are at best a mediocre team.

why didnt rafa even take owen in the summer ?>he was on a free....

Jamie Carragher is in no doubt Liverpool will come through their dip in form sooner rather than later - and the defender believes they now have the perfect fixture to turn their season around.
The Reds conceded two late goals to lose 2-1 to Lyon in the Champions League - and now go into this weekend's clash with Manchester United having lost four on the spin.

However, Carra thinks the visit of our north-west rivals on Sunday could be the catalyst for a return to form.

"We're going through a tough patch but we've been through them before and we'll bounce back, there's no doubt about that," said the vice-captain.

"We always bounce back because we've got a lot of fight and character.

"It's always a great game. That could be the game we need - if we win it will give everyone a massive lift."

Liverpool have collected three points from three in the Champions League group stages and have work to do to catch Fiorentina on six points and Lyon on nine.

Carra added: "It's massively disappointing for us and it gives us a lot to do.

"They caught us on the counter attack for the second goal. We would have been disappointed not to win but to lose that late in the game is even more so.

"You never know how results are going to go, so you've just got to look after yourself and try to win every game - and that's something we're looking to do now."

I'd actually prefer Babel upfont with Torres to be honest and have Masher and Gerrard in the middle but can see it will never happen.

I just feel that Voronin who Benitez would have given away for free in the summer being put on before Babel is a fcuking disgrace.

I have to agree with the Babbel comments, give him at least a full game,Ngog got a full game tonight and spent most of the game on his arse,i really dont think he has what it takes in the long run.Babbel has an international place to fight for and you cant blame him for his performances of late when he knows he will probably get hauled off when he starts or thrown on for 15 mins every game.
