marathonman posted this in the aquilani thread but it deserves a thread of it's own. great video, great player.for all the younger people on here, check this shizzle out...
Can you imagine him on the wing now? He was some player. Probably never got the credit he deserved because he was such an unselfish player and because it was such a great team. Would love to see him linking with Nando.
He was the best Liverpool midfielder (pre-Gerrard) imo. I remember he made the headlines because Liverpool offered him a new £10,000 a week contract to keep him at the club. £10,000! Huge at the time now seems like small change. What the hell would he be paid nowadays?
i bet you enjoyed that clip chris mate? honest to jaysus, when you look back now,he was some fcukin player.i don't think we appreciated just how good he was.it's only when you look at vids like that you say to yourself "fcukin hell,he was even better than i remember." if lpool had someone on the left with even a quarter of his ability now they'd be fcukin laughing. if i had to pick a favourite goal out of that vid it'd be the one against the villa at anfield.always remember that one,a fcukin cracker! another reason why i always remember it is cos me da brought me brother to that game and left me in dublin the boll1x!
Fantastic player....... id agree with you that he looks an even better player now. was at that villa match, only he could pull something out of the bag for us,like that.
Barnes was what I aspired to be when I was a nipper.. What a player. As a winger, he would have been the best in the world in his day, and now, all things being relative. As a Pool player, he was unbelievable, but never really cut the mustard for England.... Except this goal... Its probably Englands greatest ever goal, and it was Diggers first goal for them. He'd be a footballing God nowadays with the way footie has gone since this genius played... I'd put him right up there with the greats as far as ability, technique, pace, power went..
Loved his goal against the mancs in old trafford, same game ronnie whelan scored he og he's so proud of. That breakaway and just picturing digger. stevie and nando breaking at full pelt would have any team quaking in their boots. Genuine class act, and a player with a skill level before his time.
I certainly did Willie, reminds me of meself when I was younger, except I was better, ha ha ha! The curler against Villa is that the one you love? He scored so many crackers it's hard to pinpoint just one. They keep going on about Maradona's second against En-ger-land, but Diggers against Brazil was as good, imo.
My favourite player... you knew every time he got on the ball something was going to happen. I think he could have been even better, but for the injury he picked-up ( can't mind what it was. but it was around 1991) and he never really returned too the same player after that.
I only really caught the end of Kenny's playing career so Barnes was probably the best Liverpool player I have ever seen. Gerrard is obviously doing his best to replace him though!
Ah jeez, some wonderful memories, and some bad memories in among those goals. What a player. Shame AC Milan got Luther Blisset before we did though
