Westport Superstars won the inaugural LFC Supporters Club 5-a-side competition in Westport on August 29th last. Eight teams made the journey west with teams from the LFC Donegal Branch, Sion Mills branch (Tyrone), Athlone and Mayo supporters clubs making the numbers up. Played on a excellent surface the two teams that emerged from the group stages were the LFC Donegal side and the Westport Supporters club. In a very exciting final the Donegal side made a miraculous comeback from 4-2 down with just minutes remaining to finish all square at 4-4 after extra time to force the final into a penalty shoot out with the Westport lads emerging victorious to claim the cup. Many thanks to Peter Flynn of the Westport branch for organising the competition and for the refreshments afterwards and Kevin Neely of the Donegal branch for the fine trophy. Next Years competition is to be held in the Donegal region and details will be posted on IrishKop in the months leading up to the competition. The trophy will be staying in Donegal next time.....even if we have to bribe the ref! ;-) Valiant effort....best comeback since the Ataturk, without a doubt! Great laugh....some say 'rowdy'....I beg to differ...ahem.
By the sounds of it we'll have a lot more teams next year, heres hoping this will grow and grow and will become a big fixture on the football calender over here. ________ Etobicoke Casting
Maybe we can get a bookie to sponsor the event and let us put some money on it! ;-) Bring on Letterkenny 2010 (TBC!!)
Strong words indeed, We had better get that training camp in La Manga sorted again this year ________ Toyota AA
I've every confidence in our boys....the Donegal Reds are hardy...so long as they perfect their penalties, we're laughing....ahem. :-D
The pre-match rituals got ye through....i'm confident that you'd have won if that wedding had allowed us to crash it and request simple minds!!
;-) heh heh. Ah it'll definitely happen going by last weekend....even if it only ends up with 2 teams! Besides, it's the aftermath that will be the priority i'd imagine. Good craic...lots of witty banter i imagine....roll on May or thereabouts!!
Ah that's right! You know Finbarr? Was chatting to him and a few of the others in the pub afterwards. Knew him from a couple of previous matches. Only seen them for a short bit though...
