sureprised no one has picked up on this...

stadium officially binned until the recession is over....

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...-stadium-on-hold-until-recession-is-over.html

The 60,000-seat replacement for Liverpool's historic but crumbling Anfield was due to have opened next year, but the economic downturn forced co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. to halt building work last August.

The American owners had said it would be a "short-term delay," but they are still not able to put a date on building work resuming.

"Construction on the stadium will begin when the current contraction in the banking industry ends and the global financial markets re-establish their equilibrium," Liverpool's new managing director Christian Purslow said.

Purslow hopes the stadium on the adjacent Stanley Park will be ready in time for 2018 to stage World Cup matches should England's bid to stage the showcase event prove successful.

"The centerpiece is to deliver a world-class football ground that everyone can be proud of, a new home for the club with a stadium of at least 60,000 seats, giving the best possible match experience," Purslow said.

Liverpool has been financially hamstrung by the economics of 45,000-capacity Anfield, where there are just 34 luxury suites and few amenities to generate extra funding to enhance the squad.

Manchester United's Old Trafford can welcome 76,000 fans and Arsenal moved from 38,000-seat Highbury into 60,000-seat Emirates Stadium in July 2006.

Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher has said he is embarrassed and irritated by the delays in replacing the stadium.

Millions of pounds were written-off when existing plans to replace Anfield were ditched after Liverpool was bought by the Hicks and Gillett in 2007 so architects from Hicks' native Texas could design a more spectacular stadium.

looks like were properly ****ed now...

always thought they would have to build the stadium within a year and with them selling their shares in their other clubs to help finance it

Dont worry bud, look the ECB says the recession is almost over

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0903/ecb.html

ECB President Jean Claude Trichet has suggested that the beginning of the end of the recession is now in sight.

Mr Trichet said there were indications that 'the significant contraction in economic activity has come to an end.'

Despite the crisis in the credit markets, shrinking economies and rising unemployment, he foresees a period of stabilisation and gradual recovery.

This story only confirms what everyone knew.

They are nothing but a disease at our club...

we all knew it would never happen under these pr1cks but in saying that I am delighted.
If they built the stadium then we would be stuck with them for the long term. The club would then have a billion pound valuation placed on it and so putting it out of reach for any prospective buyer in the future and none of us want our long term future in their hands.
This is great news. I will gladly do without a new stadium for a few years if it hastens their exit.

+1. Hate to say it but the best thing that could happen now is that at least one of these two are 6ft under as soon as possible. Of natural causes of course :D

I get what you're saying but I'm not sure its great news. I think its fair to say we are about one 5th place finish from financial meltdown without being too dramatic about it. Fooked if we do and fooked if we dont for the moment....

I would imagine any new owners would want to create their own stadium anyway so yes.

That was first muted in the late 50's Mr Le Songmeister.

I don't want us to move from our ground, and would welcome another investigation to see if it's finacially viable too redevelop Anfield, afterall, most of the houses around the ground are empty and from what I hear the club own most of them.

    Just a couple of thought's:

Redirect the Anfield Road itself back into Stanley Park and redevelope the Road End. The Main stand is the olderest part of the actual ground, knock it down and take it right back, build a huge stand like the one at Elland Road.

remember reading a interview with parry years ago when this was discussed, if they redeveloped the anfield road end it would dwarf the kop in terms of size a presence (being 2 tierd and twice the height)

also if ther did the main stand as well it would only bring it up to 55,000

this is the kind of thing the club can only do once in 50 years so it needs to be done right

sure nothing is going to happen anyway...sigh

It's a pity these two clowns hadn't kept enough aside for the stadium. With thing the way they are now we probably could have done the stadium for signifcantyl less then the prices we'd have looked at 2/3 years ago.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8663148.stm

With a futuristic design, sky car and marble finish, the Moses Mabhida stadium has become one of Durban's leading tourist attractions ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.

The new $450,000 (£300,000) arena was named after an anti-apartheid activist and hero of the black working class but some South Africans say his memory is being trampled on by people who are using the stadium to harass the poor.

Now why can't we have some of that !!?????
    £300,000 !!
