Steve Staunton faces losing his Republic of Ireland job on Tuesday when the Football Association of Ireland holds an emergency board meeting.
Staunton's reign suffered a new low on Wednesday when his side drew 1-1 against Cyprus at Croke Park.

After the Euro 2008 qualifier, FAI chief John Delaney refused to give public backing to the Republic manager.

The FAI is refusing to comment but BBC Sport understands the meeting is set to take place on Tuesday.

In an RTE interview on Thursday, Delaney was repeatedly asked to back Staunton but the FAI chief refused to do so.

This is the third or fourth crisis around the management," he said.

"We had it after Cyprus, we had it after San Marino, we had it after Prague so people are getting conditioned to this form of crisis but I think that it's important board members get time to reflect on recent performances."

Staunton vowed to stay on in the post after Wednesday's game but time now appears to be running out for the Dundalk man.

Ireland are third in the Group D table but Germany and the Czech Republic have already qualified for the final in Austria and Switzerland next summer.

I think why the FAI are moving on this is because they are starting to sell there 10 year tickets for the new Lansdown Road.Apparently with Stan still in the job they were not expecting a great uptake on these tickets, and the money from the sale of these tickets is fundamental to the FAI successfully raising there half of the cash.

You fcuk with the FAIs cash stream and they will act.

I want to see Stan out of the job as much as the next guy but I dont believe that is the core if the issue. The problem is Delaney is a bean counter by trade, as long as we have a scrooge pulling the punches we will never get to where Irish soccer deserves to be.

If you were to offer the majority of ex intonations, who were still involved in the game/looking for a managers position, most would take the job if it was offered to them.

Taking the whole Bobby Robson thing aside, Stan was on €450k (£Sterling313,800) a year to manage the team. The FAI won’t offer decent Managers wages to bring in a decent Manager (no disrespect to Kerr/McCarthy etc. But they hadn’t got Premiership Management, type, experience when they took the Irish Job).

Dave O'Leary was on £Sterling1.5m a year to manage a poor Leeds side. In euro terms Delaney would have to up his 1st team manager’s wage by almost 500% to get a manager in the same league as Dave O'Leary, again no disrespect to Dave O'Leary but he is hardly the man to win a European cup for you.

Brian Kerr had a valid comment on 'The last word' last week. He asked what qualifies all the members of the board, the decision makers, on who is best suited for the Irish manager’s job? He is right. In the past getting some ex-Northern Ireland, Division1 quality, manager to shortlist applicants was hardly a quality decision making team? How could you consider that advice as golden? Without question, your average 'proper' football fan could almost do the short listing for you for free!

All in all - Stan out ... but closely followed by Delaney the Bean counter!!!!!!

It's a shame that an ex-Kop legend in Irish eyes will now be remembered for his ridiculous post match interviews and poor team performances.

Talk this evening that the FAI is split down the middle this evening on whether Stan should go or not. Still a chance he could be in charge of the Wales game with that kinda talk!

That would be a disaster.

Speaking of the Wales game I think if Stan goes I would leave Uncle Sir Bobby in charge for that one.

Why is it a disaster if Stan is still in charge?

About F****n time the man was given some opportunity to leave with dignity and not be fu***d by employers,'fans' & players alike.

Its about time that John Delaney stepped down as well along with the other 2 muppets that picked him...now to our next manager they are appointing a "outside advisor" more money wasted to try and find a new manager. Its not that hard to approach someone you want thur there agent and draw a contract up.

its a pity delaney didnt go too!
but why keep bobby robson like him as a person but he was only on a 2 year deal and with his health problems cant see why the fai would still employ him

The FAI did this whole 'outside headhunter' thing with Bryan Hamilton back in 03.Its just a way to deflect the blame if this appointment goes wrong.

Well the FAI certainly didn't endear themselves anymore to the media with the carry on they had last night by diverting the media to the wrong hotel.

As for Bobby Robson, I don't think they have renewed his contract yet have they? I guess it all depends on the new manager whether they keep him on or not.

I don't think they will keep Robson no point as I am sure the next manager will have experience.

As I said a few days ago I would have put Robson in charge for the Wales game sure they have him under contract on till then.

We don't have to pay those extortionist amounts, for a decent boss who isn't involved in the English game/set-up. Go foreign, and you'll find a good few bosses who will take the job for less than Staunton's salary.

The Irish job is a very attractive one for an ambitious boss who is prepared to get the team playing as a unit, and one who's going to stay around and nurture it into a competitive qualifying side. It's not one for a half-hearted overpaid English ex-club boss, who'll ps off as soon as the next offer from over there comes around.
