We've spent £20m net this summer!!

Liverpool are adamant manager Rafa Benitez has not had his hands tied in the summer transfer window.

The Reds have made only two big-name signings since June, with Glen Johnson and Alberto Aquilani arriving for a combined total of around £36million, while Greece international Sortis Kyrgiakos has been bought for a cut-price fee of £1.5m.

At the same time Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa have left for in deals worth an overall £33.5m, and it has been suggested Liverpool could have spent more of that income.

But the club's managing director, Christian Purslow, who took up his role in June, insists Benitez has not been restricted in his transfer activity.

    Competitors
"We've spent pretty much the same as we've spent every year over the past four or five years," Purslow said in The Times.

"We've spent about £20 million more than we've generated, which is what we expected.

"We've bought players the manager wanted to buy and sold players the manager wanted to sell and it has cost us almost to the penny what we expected it to cost.

"In fact, some of our competitors haven't spent any money and we have. Spending isn't the panacea everyone thinks it is, but we've spent £20 million and that's real money.

"There are lots of costs associated with buying players and extending players that all go into transfer funds."

This fella Purslew who is the voice of Hicks and Gillett is no mathematician anyway. We've spent about £2.5m net but the Keane deal was also struck in January which was worth about £14m so where he gets his £20m net spend from is baffling. Who is he trying to kid?

Thats bull, dont forget Leto thats adds 3 mil on, and then the Keane and Crouch money on top, plus a host of young lads leaving for 6figure sums. Purslow is just a yank yes man, and I thought Parry was bad. Its a disgrace, what fool would believe all that, and be pleased thinking, we've spent 20 mil net this season.

I saw this on football 365. Where's he getting the 20 million Net spend from there? Or do I need glasses? And he didnt mention that Aquaman isnt paid for, Keane money, Leto etc.
Biggest load of crap, this will be used as a weapon against Rafa now all season by pundits and what not

Apart from Purslows figures it is a worrying sign when he (representing the club) makes a statement like ,

""We've bought players the manager wanted to buy and sold players the manager wanted to sell and it has cost us almost to the penny what we expected it to cost."

As linit says , it will be used by the "pundits" and jurno's.

After a dodgy start to the season it could possibly look like the finger is getting pointed directly at Rafa as earlt as possible (through the media) . Hope this doesnt start a back and forth of bringing the club down even more than they already have .

I'm not sure how much more Rafa is gonna put up with to be honest. I think they're trying to force him out the door and make it look like he's the villain. They probably wanna get Klinsmann in because he has good contacts in Adidas and he can make them more profits
