One of the most devestating drama shown on TV is about to released on DVD. Hillsborough, which stars former Doctor Who (and generally the best actor in the world right now) Christopher Eccleston and the Royle Family's Ricky Tomlinson first appeared on our screens in the winter of 1996 on ITV and bagged itself a BAFTA.

The DVD comes 20 years after one of the worst footballing tragedies in history and coincides with the current government’s decision to release official documents relating to the disaster.

Written by Jimmy McGovern (Cracker, The Streets), Hillsborough is an emotional, powerful and highly acclaimed dramatisation of personal grief and public issues in the wake of the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster, where 96 Liverpool FC fans were crushed to death at a FA Cup semi-final match against Nottingham Forest.

The story follows the stories of three victims’ families, from the initial excitement of match day to the legal battles that followed the tragedy. Hillsborough presents a raw, honest portrayal of the campaign for truth within a culture of closed ranks and cover-ups.

The drama also seeks to dismantle damaging lies regarding fans’ conduct, perpetuated by sections of the popular press which claimed that fans looted the dead, and seen by McGovern and others as symptomatic of an ongoing vilification of the working class within the British media.

The impact of this drama is considered an important factor in the setting up of an official inquiry into the disaster and the way football matches are policed today. Not many shows can claim that. Not many shows have been nearly as good as this.

Hillsborough will be released on Network on 7th September 2009 and should retail at £15.99. If you haven't seen it and are a fan of hard-hitting drama, this is an absolute must.

it was on tv to mark the 20th Anniversary. It's very well portrayed but is very sad and upsetting watching.
