I need some help with my laptop guys, i went on holiday for a week & when i came back my laptop has been acting up. When i turn it on it asks do i want to start it normally or with one of the safe modes, if i pick normally it brings me to my password screen so i put the password in & then it just stays loading & won't bring up the main screen. I can only access the net using 'safe mode with networking' but thats only basic stuff. I tried doing a system restore but it won't let me do one. Its a HP, vista & i have it 2 years!!

Try running a virus scan when you boot in to safe mode , its possible that there is a virus on it

OK, i've been looking around to see what the general cause of this problem is, and the word virus is not mentioned once. However I would recommend running a virus scan just incase.
Most of the problems are due to Norton AntiVirus messing things up, so if you have that I would uninstall it.

Also, have you tried using you're restore disks?

    OR

Turn on the computer and when you see the Logo - hit F10 to go into setup.
In setup go to diagnostics and then test your HardDrive etc. if something fails, you will need a new one.
If everything passes, and the problem persists. Do the following:

NOTE: Back up all your important files and information before doing this!
    1. Have your copy of the Operating System and device drivers of your machine. If you have a recovery disk, MUCH BETTER!!!
    2. REFORMAT your hard drive. Reinstall the OS and Device drivers.
    3. Setup your internet connection.
    4. Make sure you INSTALL an Anti-virus Program before surfing the net. UPDATE it! AVG is a good one, I use that and McAffee with Adaware SE site advisor. Never got a single pop up or virus.
    5. At the same time Check the security status of your OS. Specially the firewall. UPDATE IT ASAP!!!
6.Update your OS using (I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium) windows update program.
    7. download other browsers, like firefox, opera, chrome etc. IE8 seems to be a trouble maker.
    8. create a system restore point.

And the computer should be like new then. And you can transfer all the backed-up files and data back to the laptop.

It depends on what failed? new hard drive wont cost that much if its the problem, you could pick one up for between €20 and €200 depending on hat speed, size etc. And then in repair shops they usually have a fee just to figure out the problem, and then whatever they charge you for the hard drive and then an installation fee, so that could cost at least upwards of €100 if you are lucky. So your best bet is to pick up a cheap hard drive and do it yourself, or get someone you know that can do it,. its fairly straight forward, there are plenty of tutorials such as this one:

    http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_1.htm

Which will show you step by step what to do.

I looked up the HP website & i followed the instructions they advised which was to press F8 at the logo screen & then press enter when 'last known good configuration' came up. After i did this it went into the main page but stalled so i restarted & now its back working again properly. I hope to god it doesn't crash again!!

Is it possible for you to perform a system restore to an instance where it worked properly?

Yes, Your computer creates a restore point after an alteration to you registry or any major installations incase something went wrong.

    TO perform this task, goto
START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>SYSTEM RESTORE. And then you can choose from a list of available dates,.

Help needed lads. the laptops gone pear shaped. Big red warning on screen. DANGER!! YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED and then waffle about spywate etc. Keep getting error messages when trying to run any program files although Explorer starts up when you close the error box. Keep getting pop ups that take ages to close about buying Windows Ant-virus Pro or Windows Police Pro. Laptop is years old now and always used AVG without any issues. AVG box pops up in German now !! so can't understand what they are saying but see problem highlighted in program files and trojan gets mentioned. Anyone any ideas. Grateful for any help. Thanks, Jerry.
