I am giving the auld marathon a bash this year and have been workin me hole off to prepare. clocking about 45 miles a week on the road..not too shabby. Then I actually looked up the history behind the marathon and turns out the whole martathon idea started in some war (battle of marathon)..some chap ran 26 miles and then died...hope I dont die!!

best of luck mate, i did it a few years ago.
you will be fine, there are alot of people along the way encouraging you - when you go by a group of people and they are cheering, kids giving you high fives - it gives you a bit of an adrenalin boost.
There is a really good vibe between everyone running too

I honestly dont know...I eat a fair bit. Nothing performance enhancing or that...have you any suggestions?? Are you doin it?
Fair play to ya for doing it, and best of luck with it. I thought about doing it for a minute, but my lazy lifestyle didn't agree with following up on that idea. Maybe next year... :p
I do a fair bit of training myself, be it either 10K runs cycling and the football team...sometimes I take creatine sometimes, not for the muscle building side of things, but because of the ATP (energy) it gives you...other times I find it very hard to fuel my body at the right times, at I find that i dip at a point during the day or evening, regardless of the slow burning carbs i eat...

If you have been doing 45 miles a week then you will be fine.hope you have done a few 20 milers.Load up with loads of carbs 2 or 3 days beforehand and drink lots of water (2 litres a day).
Get plenty of rest day before and good nights sleep.
Have bowl of porridge if u can (slow releasing food) about 2 1/2 hours before and a sports drink 60 mins before.
Go out and enjoy it.Its not easy but if it is your first, remember to enjoy because when you cross the finish it is one of best and emotional moments in life.
BTW you will burnabout 3000 calories.
Enjoy
well done to all, The most i done was the 10ks, done it for several years on the trot running the ladies marathon's that was my limit, used to train in the phonex park, and loved it - knee is totally knackered had 2 operations on it so now its just watching sports and we all know where my loyalties lie. hope thats a good enough excuse. for me

Ahhhhhhh I did it and I didnt die....that in my books is a great success. Smashed into the wall at about 15 miles, worst pain in the world (possibly ever), after about 40 bottles of water, 4 club energise' and a whole tonne of energy gels I finally got to the end in one piece...wow its a good feeling!!

I would love to...finished in 4:17...now that's not the official time its the time I passed the line so I would say it is closer to 4 hours on the mark. Passed Tommy Tiernan near the start..he looked in pain at the 3 mile mark the poor chap.

Well done again, its something I have always wanted to do.
Many on here planning on doing the marathon this year? Decided back in June I'd give it a go and apart from a minor hiccup in the training at the start of this month when I picked up an injury, it hasn't been too bad.
Going to be the first ever one I'll compete in - slightly nervous about being actually able to complete the course but can only put the head down for the next 4 weeks and hope for the best I guess.

Yeah i'm doing it, for the 2nd time. . Really looking forward to it, (or getting it over with) i done it last year to help me lose weight and stop smoking which was successful in both thank god. . Lost nearly 5 stone and still could do with losing another 1 or 2 and still of the smokes. Took me 5.27 last year hoping to shave an hour of this year but prob be nearer to half an hour of it.

A long weekend in the Dam should be ideal preperation :p

Haha, going to be using the Dam as my time out :D
Will be in Naples only a few days before it, might ease up on the vodka on the Friday but load up on carbs with plenty of Luigi's finest pasta and pizza while we're there
Bit late now I know but in future if anyone needs advice or physiological testing done give me a shout. Work with a few international athletes, one who will qualify for the marathon in London 2012 (hopefully) and one who ran in Beijing

Gonna do 2 next year. The Connemarathon in April and Cork in June. I've only done 2 half marathons before so not sure what to expect after the 13mile mark.

Did the Dublin marathon in 97 +98. Always tempted to try one more.. maybe London, but while the mind says 'go for it' the body says 'go for a drink'.
Fair play + best of luck to everyone running it this year.
