Looking at replacing my existing laptop and have my eye on this one from Acer: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/655410#productInformationSection Anyone got any experience of Acer? Product reviews all look very poisitive but thought I'd get a few opinions from the good people of Irishkop before deciding....
My good lady's brother has an Acer and is well happy with it. He took the p!ss out of me for buying a Sony with much the same spec and me spending an extra 250 bullets on it just for the name. I never heard anything bad about Acer laptops at all Joe.
Have one for three years, not a bit of bother with it. Got it for 700 lids in Harvery Norman, same spec for Dell was over 1500 at the time.
got one for my misses for christmas i bought it in dixons in newry saved a hundred and 50 buying it up there and i have to say its much much better than my dell one in work and i have heard storys since saying there the the same as sony only different faces not sure if thats true or not but thats the rumour
I have an acer laptop the last 2 years and haven't had a problem with it. I wouldn't use it for much else other than the internet though.
It depends on what you are going to be using the laptop for. My Acer that im on at the moment is for using the internet and watching films. And for using Photoshop CS4 or Flash CS4, or Maya or for playing games I have an Alienware M17x, cost me a fortune by the way, but its for college use. So it all depends on what you need the laptop for. My Acer and the one your interested in would not be able to do what I need of it. Also i've noticed with my Acer it over heats too easily and shuts down. And it runs Windows Vista fairly poorly compared to my M17x. So again Acers are great depending on what you intend to do with them.
But is that not down to the spec of the computer more than just the make. I mean if you buy a Toshiba, for example, with poor spec and expect it to work miracles then it will let you down too. But as a brand/make, I think Acer can hold its own.
That is totally true, but Acer dont do a spec good enough for my standards, lol. So I splashed out. Acer are good, but as I said it does depend on what you need it for, I wouldn't be expecting to play the new Call of Duty on it, or trying to listen to music while your editing something especially while running vista or it'll crash. The problem with all new laptops excluding Alienware and XPS(from dell) is that the processing power and speed isn't what they used to be. Most come with out dated core duo and push out a paltry 2.0Ghz at most and thats if you're lucky, think acer ranges between 1.2Ghz and 1.8Ghz. Price wise they are excellent, and for the average person (non computer nerd/geek) they're probably the best overall.
Thanks for all the replies - appreciate the feedback Will be mostly for work purposes so will be running: - accounts package - microsoft office - email - web browsing - itunes - and of course dreamweaver for the infamous www.block102.com website! Using a three year old compaq at the moment which is beginning to show its age... Not into the games so don't require fancy graphics etc. The long battery life really appeals to me. Had a look at the prices up North. They are a good deal cheaper but the fact I can claim back the VAT down here pretty much cancels out the savings there....
Had one for few years, had few problems with it, battery, chord, harddrive once too. Make sure you partition your harddrive, it does overheat as someone else said too, gets quite warm at times.
Have an acer myself and hasn't give me any trouble unlike my last fujitsu siemens. Good and reliable laptop.
You shouldnt really be having any major problems with a 3 year old laptop, especially for what you need to use it for. Maybe your harddrive just needs a bit of a cleanup/defrag etc.
