You probably know this yourself already but for anyone from the big smoke who is thinking of heading down to this and wants to avoid an overnight, there is a special train running for the game and will be departing Limerick afterwards at 11pm.

Curragower down on the river is about ten minutes walk from the ground. There's a new big place called Ardhu in the Clarion Suites on the Ennis Road too, similar distance. The two nearest the ground ain't the best

Cheers for the info lads, the Ardhu pub sounds good.I was going to book that Clarion hotel when it was going cheap a few months ago but ended up getting the Maldron for a decent price. I believe there is a shuttle bus going from a few of the hotels including the Maldron which is a great idea.

sweet jesus, Cahill again!!!
Mediocre stuff at best in that first half. Only positive I can see coming out of this is we'll rid of the early season cobwebs and be in a more prepared state for Cyprus. But even that is being optimistic at an unrealistic level

Poor result alright, but at least there was a bit more going on in the 2nd half. Could be the kick up the arse needed ahead of Cyprus. The lack of creativity in the middle of the park is painful, really missing a Stephen Ireland or Andy Reid in that area.

This might sound bad, but here goes.
If Ireland do qualify for the world cup can anyone actually see them beating or scoring against anyone.
I personally think that with the midfield and squad that we have, we could be sent home from S.Africa with no points. We have one world class player in Given, then there are duff, keane, dunne, who are decent enough players then there are alot of average players in terms of international players - doyle, oshea, mcgeedy.
Anyone agree - disagree

Not nice to watch, slow, boring football. Need some better players to be coming though. And to make it worse that bitter scoring twice. Ah lets make the important matches count...

Bit of a knee jerk Aido to a poor result. Trap wont give two fcuks about this friendly.
We are unbeaten in qualifying so far. We have some good quality Premiership players. Stephen Reid and Steve Finnan to come back in.
Given, Finnan, O Shea, Dunne, Kilbane, McGeady, Reid, Whelan, Duff, Keane Doyle.
That first XI will all be playing in PL or champs league this seaosn (I reckon Duff will be back in PL). When Mick McCarthy took us to WC 2002 we had a lot of average players (Holland, Cunningham, Stauton, Kinsella) and our captain deserted us. If we got lets say a group of Brazil, Russia and Japan, I could see us getting into the second stage. We have to get there first though

But we still have the problem of no midfield. Can you see the like of st ledger, whelan, mcgeedy or doyle in one of the top teams. Also of those names listed out by you, we are an aging team with no throughput coming through.
Maybe a knee jerk, but we were cack tonight

Didn't see it to be honest as I dont have sky and knew it would be a borefest. We beat Denmark away a few years ago with Stan and it was not a sign of the crap to come.
I see what your getting about the quality of the midfield but I would class the players above in the same category as Chris Morris, John Sheridan, Tommy Coyne and Kenny Cunnigham. All players who played in decent teams.
One thing is for sure, Stephen Reid, Andy Reid and Stephen Ireland would improve the midfield options infinately

Look the way i see it is like this. We have a very very painfully average squad of players who are at times playing way above their level. Tonight they played brutal againest a very ordinary team in Australia. I think we have to be realistic. If we reach the World Cup it will be a fantastic achievement and Trap will have done all he can do with the players we have at our disposal. Once we get there you never know and given the right draw we could well make it out of our group as the players would raise their game imo. I've full respect for the players we have who i'm sure will be bitterly dissapointed with tonights game. At least they have and show a pride in playing for their country even if they are'nt world beaters unlike the Stephen Ireland's and Roy Keanes of this World.

Can anyone who would consider themselves to be quite knowledgeable about football explain to be how Kevin Kilbane has made a career out of playing football. Take his physical fitness out of the equation and your left with nothing.
Before I get accused of knee jerk reactions I go to all the home games (expect tonight I might add) and I've seen him play tonnes of times. I've never seen him even look at our keeper for a short kick out. He has a fear of the ball, give him a 9-5 job and a drink problem and he wouldnt get a game for my team.
In a billion years he would never get a game for Spain or Brazil yet he will retire a multimillionare with a cracking bird aswell.

Glenn Whelan is absolute rubbish + even though I hate the little ****er(Ireland) we need him in the midfield with Andy Reid/Stephen Reid beside him.Gibson is so slow on the ball + never plays a decent forward pass. Our central midfield show be able to hold on to the ball and pass but as Ronnie Whelan said every team we play seem to be able to hold on to the ball a lot better than us!

Keane looked lively last night as he always seems to do for Ireland. Hope we can keep him at bay on Sunday. Need a good start to season imo
This friendly will do little to rattle Trap, more of a test of players. After all players are still in pre-season mode. That said, come Sat/Sun we need all our lads getting match fitness and awareness quick. Got big game in 3 weeks in Cyprus
No repeat of last time please.....3 points as we march onwards

Yeah Agree with that really Whelan, Andrews and Gibson should not be competing for them 2 places in midfield, they would be alrite in a team like San Marino, still dont think Whelan would get on, Whelan only a footballer in the first place because of his dad, really annoy me how much I hate them 3 :D Bring Ireland and Reid back and even bring Lee Carsley back, If I was manager I would go for against Cyprus
-------------Given----------------
Finnan----Dunne-----OShea----Kilbane
--------------Carsley-----------------
--McGready-----------------Duff------
--------------Ieland/Reid----------
-------------Keane----Doyle-----------
And then Welcome to The WorldCup, Would also use more of Stephen Hunt, Liam Lawrence and Andy Keogh, Also who's for wanting to bring Clinton Morrison back can't understand why he is not in the squad when there is planks like Long and Foley there

I know a bloke from Crumlin who's son used to play ball with Whelan as a kid and when Whelan was back over this summer and down his local having a few pints with himself and his dad told them he was on 35,000 pound a week:eek:. How in the name of sweet jesus a player of Glen Whelan's ability is on that sort of money say's everything about the modern game.

Because the fella refuses to get fit. He has all the skill in the world but is'nt perpered to go that extra mile to become a top top player. Real shame :(

I was at the match yesterday evening. Thought Glen Whelan was excellent, head and shoulders above anyone else in a green jersey. The criticism of him is very harsh he's a decent player. Gibson was terrible and Andrews made a difference when he came on. John o Shea started most games for one of the best teams in the world last season......i just don't get it, he looked very poor last night, his first touch is brutal. And Kilbane? How he has been 1st choice for Ireland for such a long time I will never know. Severe lack of pace in our team aswel, id feel pretty confident of outpacing keane or duff over 40 yards. And Doyle is no speed merchant either. The only 2lads that looked like they might create a goal were McGeady and Stephen Hunt when he came on.
Also a mention for Harry Kewell....the poor lad got booed every time he touched the ball, funny tho :D Thought he had a very good game tho.
Cyprus were hammered 6-1 by Albania last night so maybe the future isn't as bad as some of us think!

35K a week for a player of his very limited ability makes you sick when you hear about people struggling to pay bills but fair play to him if Stoke are stupid enough to pay him that!Seriously though could you imagine someone like Xavi,Iniesta,Lampard,Stevie etc quaking in their boots at the prospect of playing against him?!!!!At least Andy Reid and Stephen Ireland would keep hold of the ball and give us more of a threat going forward.
At least it looks like Cyprus are up sh1ts creak too so we could stumble across the qualifying line yet!

I don't think we started with our best eleven, but its a friendly Trap was tryin things out, bad performance even by the standard of the lads that played but, do people not agree its time to give up talkin about Ireland and Andy Reid?!

+1
In my opinion with both players in the squad we stand a better chance of doing well in the world cup, however it would't be fair on the players who've played all campaign and then get left out for 2 better players, its like what Brazil used to do, in just playing players from South American clubs in qualifying and the in the world cup the stars turn up. So hopefully we can get them on board before Cyprus or Italy at the latest, after that i dont think they have an international future.

Definately mate and if they weren't there sure we could always talk about coaxing Keane out of retirement! :o
I think we should write a nice letter to Trap, maybe he'll be delighted we reminded him of these two forgotten legends of irish football, sure he's probably forgotten all about Reid & Ireland?

Whats this writing a letter shite about? Look, the Republic are in a fantastic position right now, and it will take a monumental fcuk up to not at least make the playoffs. But the day will come when we go out in the qualifiers, or who knows maybe even at the world cup itself and plenty of people will ask (probably even your good self) how far further we could have gone if Ireland/Reid had been in the squad.
Don't forget this is a small football nation and faces a massive uphill battle to compete in games against opposition of a high standard. No doubt this debate will flare up on a grand scale over the next few weeks and months and I think your being more than a little naive asking us all to just forget about two great players at our disposal.

I do see your point, I just think its getting old complaining about the players that aren't playing as oppose to concentrating on the players who are!
The whole will he/won't he about Ireland has been another soap opera and Reid is obviously out of favour with the manager, if either player was to play they would make a massive difference there's no denying that, but I think until either player is included in the squad I think its a waste of time talking about them, thats my opinion anyway!
