I was away and missed what went on, anyone know much about the situation i just seen the picture on the front of one of yesterdays papers!
Operation Black Satin stormed the building after the curfew expired 27 arrested released without charge this morning, supposedly a woman 8 months pregenant went into labour at the scene. ( In a nutshell)
Yeah i seen that but what was behind it? was just wondering what caused it and what people's opinion on it are, right and wrong and so on !
From what i know Gerry the company folded and only offered 2weeks redundcey to their staff, who where nearly a decade + there. Think they where right in what they done imo.
i was away also but as far as i know the jobs were due to go at the end of the month anyway but last friday they decided to close the shop with immediate effect.the staff decided to stage a sit in as there was still a dispute over severence pay. the company got a court order to remove the staff from the shop and when they refused to leave voluntarily they were all arrested. i'm sure i heared on the radio earlier that they are back in talks now over the severence pay.....
They were offered 5 weeks for every year of service.... They wanted 8 and by law Thomas Cook only had to give them 2.... I think 5 weeks is fair enough but they said because the company is so profitable in the UK they deserve more.
They actually offered five weeks pay but intimated that they would drop it to two if the workers did not agree...the workers have a right to fight for better entitlements. The big garda presence was a bit over the top... http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0802/breaking1.html
Fair play to them for standing up for themselves but i found the whole thing a bit embarrassing, what with the singing & the big crowd & reporters waiting for them to come out of prison. It was hardly the Birmingham six being released.
your right in what your saying but if they are creaming it in britain why should the irish workers be shafted.they are honouring holidays that were not tkaing yet so they cant be that bad off
the government and the powers that be, were very very quick at putting these ordinary workers before the courts.they were'nt that fast at arresting the bankers and the fraudsters, who have robbed the irish people of billions. This government is a fcuking shambles.
+1 This "government" is a joke! As for the workers 5 weeks is fair enough imo. Many people have only got the 2 weeks.
pathetic. get a real job you fools. nobody used the place, it was losing money. what do they want? idiots
thomas cook offered 5 weeks, which was more than they had to give, the staff wanted more, thomas cook said 5 weeks is all your going to get, the staff went nuts and made a stand, thomas cook said fcuk you and now are giving them 2 weeks, which is all they have to give, and now the workers want there 5 weeks, but afther all this thomas cook are saying fcuk the lot of ya, your getting 2 weeks and there's nothing you can do about it. there's 2 ways to look at this, 1. they should have taken what they where given and bite the bullet, after all the contry is in such a bad way. 2. fair play to them for taking a stand, on sitting on the fence one this one
I respect the staff for trying to make a stand ... however, ultimately the fault rests with the government, as there should be a much higher minimum payout for people being made redundant .. the statutory payout is simply too little when you consider that these companies have all made a lot of money thanks to their staff in times past and need to acknowledge that peoples lives are heavily influenced by decisions made at "HQ".
