Ferrari have confirmed seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher will make a sensational return to Formula One to stand in for Felipe Massa for the rest of the season.

German driving legend Schumacher still works for Ferrari as an advisor, but after Massa's shocking injury in Hungary he will now get back behind the wheel once again.

Although the idea was originally rubbished, Ferrari have confirmed that Schumacher will come out of retirement to replace Massa - provided he passes a fitness test.

"Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race," a Ferrari statement said.

"Michael Schumacher has shown his willingness and in the next few days he will undergo a specific programme of preparation at the end of which it will be possible to confirm his participation in the championship starting with the European Grand prix on Aug. 23."

Although Schumacher has been retired for three years, he felt that he owed it to ferrari to step in for Massa until the Brazilian is fit enough to return.

"Though it is true that the Formula One chapter has long been closed for me, it is also true that for team loyalty reasons I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation," Schumacher said.

Schumacher must prove his fitness first, but he has some time to prepare as the F1 season takes a summer break ahead of the European Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23.

The hype around this will be unreal should he prove hes fit enough. Should be good to see how he goes

Schumacher's comeback is off.

Michael Schumacher has called off his Formula One comeback with Ferrari because of a neck injury, the driver confirmed on his website.

The racing driver was hurt in a motorcycling accident earlier this year.

Schumacher said he informed top Ferrari officials on Monday evening that "unfortunately I'm not able to step in for Felipe" Massa, whom he was set to replace temporarily.

The seven-time champion said in a statement on his website: "The consequences of the injuries caused by the bike-accident in February, fractures in the area of head and neck, unfortunately have turned out to be still too severe."

The 40-year-old, who retired after the 2006 season, said his neck cannot yet stand up to the stresses caused by Formula 1 racing.

Schumacher's first race was expected to be the European Grand Prix at Valencia on August 23.

Last week, he said he was slimming down for the race, but complained of some neck pain.

"I only have to admit that my neck pinches a bit. We have to get a grip on that as health has priority - that's the clear arrangement made with Ferrari and, by the way, with my wife, too," Schumacher said.

Newstalk were hinting that this may have been as much to do with him knowing he'd not be winning anything, as his health ...

Must admit, while F1 is a bit of a mess at the moment, when he was driving and winning everything he put me completely off the sport as it became so boring ...

and thats before I go off on a rant about Ferrari being the Man Utd of F1 LOL ;) :D

Mclaren are the Man U of F1...despise them with a passion...

Ferrari have the prancing horse, we have the Liverbird - iconic symbols ... what do United and Mclaren have thats iconic, sweet FA!! :)

Bit sad to see him not returning as it would have created another buzz around the sport. But his health is more important than a couple of races.
