Forgot to post this when I came into work Heard on Radio Merseyside this morning that Sports Minister said that they have no objection to giving the Hillsborough families the needed police reports in Autumn of this year. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/live...ugh-papers-disclosure-battle-100252-24266543/ Good old Liverpool Echo has the story. I hope that between now and Autumn that the police are not "altering documents"
http://www.independent.ie/breaking-news/national-news/hillsborough-tragedy-panel-named-2032259.html Hillsborough tragedy panel named Tuesday January 26 2010 The former deputy chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland has been named as a member of a group set up to study secret documents from the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy. Paul Leighton, is one of seven members of the Hillsborough Independent Panel, which will be chaired by the Right Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool, and will meet for the first time on February 4 in Liverpool. It will begin a process of making public key documents - from the police, fire and ambulance services, coroner and Sheffield City Council - about the deaths of 96 Liverpool football fans. The other six members of the panel are: Public information expert Christine Gifford; TV producer and researcher Katy Jones; academic criminologist Professor Phil Scraton; Dr Bill Kirkup, former associate medical director at the Department of Health; broadcaster Peter Sissons; and archivist Sarah Tyacke. Announcing the line-up, Home Secretary Alan Johnson said: "The new panellists are all experts in their field and will bring a range of vital skills to the work of the Hillsborough Independent Panel. "I am delighted they have accepted the responsibility of assisting Bishop James in releasing papers surrounding the terrible tragedy." The Hillsborough Independent Panel and its terms of reference were established last month. The panel's job is to oversee public disclosure of the documents, letting the victims' families know their content first. However, there is a question mark over precisely how much information will be publicised, with one point of reference stating: "The fundamental principles will be full disclosure and no redaction of content, except in the limited legal and other circumstances outlined in the protocol." Bishop James said: "Great thought has been given to the set of skills needed to do this important work. I am so pleased that my colleagues have agreed to join the panel and dedicate themselves to this major task. Together they provide excellent skills for the serious work of overseeing the disclosure of the documents." Press Association
@LivEchonews Breaking news - the #Hillsborough panel will release the files on the tragedy on September 12. Story to follow
Panel announces date of Hillsborough families' disclosure http://hillsborough.independent.gov.uk/news-and-press/statement_june2012.html The Hillsborough Independent Panel is now approaching the completion of its work of securing maximum possible disclosure of documents relating to the disaster and its aftermath. Disclosure, as it has been made clear, will be first to the Hillsborough families and then to the wider public. At the same time, in line with its Terms of Reference, the Panel will publish its Report explaining how the disclosed documents add to public understanding. The Independent Panel has accessed and analysed documents from over 80 organisations and running to over 400,000 pages. Earlier this year the Panel announced that because it was still receiving new material it would complete its work in the Autumn. The Panel is on course to achieve this and announces today that the disclosure to families will take place on Wednesday 12 September in Liverpool. The Panel hopes that by making this announcement it will give the bereaved families sufficient time to prepare for the disclosure. One of the Panel’s central objectives has been consultation with the bereaved families. At its first meeting in February 2010 it met representatives of the three family groups. The Panel has also contacted those families not affiliated to the groups. It is the Panel’s intention that these consultations should continue. In due course the Panel will contact each family to explain details of the disclosure arrangements.
