Late last night (and I mean late the game went on ontill 2am,and I was up for work at 05:45) I qualified for the Ladbrokes’ Irish Poker Festival to be held in Irish National Events Center (INEC) Killarney. The prize is worth about 1k with 3 nights at Hotel Gleneagle. Its a ranked event so you get European ranking points for taken part and it has a super structure.

Has anybody ever been to the Hotel Gleneagle..?If so whats it like and is it close to the INEC..?I have not had time to research this yet.

Well done mate. Have tried a few satellite's for this event so far with no luck. Its meant to be a great event. I play in the same casino as last years winner Jimmy McSweeney. He won €100k! As far as i know the tournament is held on the same grounds as the Gleneagle hotel.

If I win big we will have a nice piss up,mark my words.A poker playing mate has begged the free trip along seems as MrsDub13 cant make it,thats one of the draw backs of having so many kids.

I just came close in another qualifier so am running good.I have been knocking on the door of these big events for the last 18 months/2 years only missing out on a ticket to a big tournament in rio de janeiro (Latin American Poker Tour) by one place,I came close (within 3 spots) for big tournament's in Costa Rica,Uruguay & Hong Kong.

So to hit one in poxy Kerry is a bit of a disappointment but its a start.

a quick update from this,i am posting this from my phone so i will do a proper report when i get back.i am still in but below average, day two starts at one and i will not be hanging around with a low stack i am going to push giving half a hand.i had two huge beats in the first 30min and i was down to 4k from a starting stack of 15k.it took me 6 hours to get back over the starting stack again.there were 755 runners and about 300 are gone.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

I went out a few hours into day two,its a terrific tournament with a great structure. On day one I had two big hits,I managed to run a Q high flush (second nut flush as the A was on the board) into a house that hit on the river. This hand did me a lot of damage, there was some big betting going on and if truth be told the other player had no right to be involved with just a pair of 6s.

I regained my composure and not long later I look down and see a pair of Aces, again some heavy betting as I am trying to get back the chips I lost in the last hand,I got rivered in this hand as well by a set hit on the river. Not much I could do about it I think I did a good bit of damage limitation but still did a bit of damage.

Anyway a couple of levels into the tournament I am in bad shape down to about 4k (from a starting stack of 15k),its a strange sitauation to be in as relatiave to the blinds I still have loads of chips at this stage I think we were only at the 50/100 level so i still have 40 odd big blinds. But relative to the other players at the table I had a very short stack,in fact one of the players had about 48k in chips which was loads this early in the game.

As you can imagine i am now in a difficult spot as I need to get my stack back up to level with the other players but the problem is the blinds are still so low and I cant keep over betting the pot in order to build it up as I am only going to get called by something beating me or a big stack taken a chance.Add to this the fact that my table had no bad players you will understand how difficult the task was that I was faced with,Oliver Boyce a former World Speed Poker champion was at the table.I know Oily from boards and I have played with him a good few times. One thing has changed from this big games over the last 3/4 years is that now most players in them can play years ago you always had a good load of donkeys (I hate the term fish) playing. In the first few hours I dont think I saw one bad mistake.

It took me 6 long long hours to finally get back up above the starting stack and in fact over the tournament average.I am telling you now this was no mean feet and very difficult but enjoyable and it was a great experience. In this stage I got up to my tournament high of just over 30k.I could now play a little, the mad think is I played a lot better when I had a low stack, over the next couple of hours I did not see a hand and when I did I had to drop it.

I was now down to about 18k,I then got hit by a bigger set and was down to about 13k when with 30 min to go before the end of day one the table I had been playing on for the day got split. My new table was just as tough with Dave Masters & Paddy McCluskey (two well known players on the Irish scene, plus Dave was one of the chips leaders in the wholetournamen) there was also a couple of tough UK players at the table.Nothing much happned for the last 30 min I did not want to come back the next day with only about 10/15k in chips so if I had of got anything at all I would have pushed to ether double up or go bust.

I did not get anything I could even push with so came finished day one with 12k in chips,I was not to happy with this as the average was about 22k it was definitely playable. At this stage we had lost about 250 players.Day two was really a non event for me cards wise,I did not get anything nothing at all I could push with and I had to push as I did not have a stack I could scare anybody off with.A couple of hands before I got knocked out I got a pair of 2s which was bay far my best hand of the day,I decided to push with them when the action came around to me but I had to change my mind as there was loads of action in front of me.It was a good call as it turned out to be Jacks V Kings.

I was in danger of been blinded away,we were now on the 400/800 level with a 50 running antie and I only had 9k in chips with each round of the table costing 1700.I decided not to let the blinds run through me and no matter what I was pushing before the big blind came to me again, again I got 8 3 and the like right around ontill I was under the gun. Before the dealer even delt the hand I decided no matter what I get I am pushing,I was happy enough to look down at K 9.So I pushed and its folded around to the small blind and he calls and turns over AK,I was raging he had one of my cards we hit a king on the flop but no 9 so that was the end of my tournament.

It was a bit of a anti climax but overall I had a good tournament.I tend to play well against better players and in this good structured events,I need to start playing more of them.

Unlucky man. i play a bit of live poker myself...and that must have been some grind,(and good play) to go from 4k back up to over the tournament average.
you gave it a fair crack.
two of my mates played it...but they went out at the halfway stage.
