Jose Mourinho has accused Chelski supporters of being too 'soft' to realise the club's ambition of being a 'great club'. In a remarkable stereotyping of the Stamford Bridge faithful, Mourinho depicted Chelski supporters as 'foreign' and 'cosmopolitan'. "It's the soft sort of fan who doesn't get behind the team a lot, who don't organise themselves into fan groups, with the cheering on that is characteristic of the image of English football. "They create a different atmosphere because a lot of our fans also go to the opera, the theatre, other types of shows that don't lend themselves to lots of shouting. That's the Chelsea fan. "That's why Chelsea have some difficulty in asserting themselves as a great club of English football."
That's a pretty harsh and uncalled for thing to say to fans who idolised you while you were there. He;s probably right with regards to alot of them, and I by no means like most Chelsea fans, but I;m sure they have a large number of long-time, pre-Abramovich fans who stuck by their club throught the sh*t days, and are now having to listen to this from their most successful manager ever. The word 'classless' comes to mind
The chelsea fans that I shared a tram on the way to Old trafford madin 2006 were certainly not cosmopolitan, More like combat 18.
What a hypocrite, after him playing up to them all the time that he was there. Why did he throw his league winners' medal into the crowd so?!
I'd say the hardcore agree with him and love him more for it as hate the chav element. A bit like when Keane was criticising the corpo crowd at OT and praising the away fans and also commenting on soulless performances and getting on Ronaldo's back for his tricks. A lot of fans loved it and was a case of saying what they were thinking. In this case it does seem a bit pointless though and widely generally, the yids support this team, the blacks this, the poor people another (what about poor black Jews ?).......interesting history I heard is that the area that Spurs and Arsenal hail from are no more or less Jewish than each other so its a bit of myth maybe more to do with Alan Sugar than anything.
Nothing cosmopolitan about being spat at from the upper tier when visiting their place or the number of right hooks flying in your direction as you leave the ground.
I just feel sorry for the poor young fellas who just happened to start supporting football when Chelsea started winning... back to obscurity with them and hopefully another 50 years of hurt...!
