If Ribery is going to join any club in England why not the most successful club side EVER in England? If we are going to win the league we need to sign the likes of Ribery IMO and enough of the unknowns.

As much as i hate Hicks and Gillette it does'nt take away from the fact that if they are to make us into the money making force they want us to be it means spending big. IMO 40m would be crazy money for a player like Ribery but if that's what Rafa wants then who am i to disagree.:)

Skybet this afternoon brought Franck Ribery in from 66/1 to 8/13 to join Liverpool.
The firm took a number of bets this afternoon after the French winger had last week ruled out a move to England.
Ribery's price was lowered and backed throughout the day before the Harrogate-based firm made the Bayern Munich player odds-on to join the Anfield club.
Skybet’s Dale Tempest said: "Every price we have put up has been taken on Ribery moving to Liverpool, which has left us stumped as in recent weeks he has been liked with every other club but the Reds!
"After seeing money for him to join Man United and Real Madrid at the same time that Bayern Munich say he’s going nowhere, we’ve now seen a flood of bets on him to join Liverpool.
"8/13 may seem a very short price but after the losses we made last week on Michael Owen, who was gambled down from 20/1 to move to Manchester United, we are taking no chances."

Fookin hell, only thing I can think of is that Real will fork out 35 million for Alonso and Rafa is going to blow it on Ribery. In my opinion that would be savage value as Ribery is a lot younger than Alonso and could provide that cutting edge from the left
Would love to know who has actually been placing all this money on him signing for us. It reminds me of the betting market when Ireland were looking for a new manager, I think there was an odds on favourite every second day due to the influx of bets that were being placed on a particular manager on certain days.

Dont be suprised if Liverpool have more money for transfers than everyone thinks. Ever notice how on sky all transfers prices are shown except liverpools who are always undisclosed including Glen Jo . I dont rate Frank Ribery, something about him that I feel he aint what people think he is. 'Over-rated' is the word I would use. I brought up he was once labelled the next Zidane as I hate when I see that, people labelling players the next '......', Frank Ribery couldnt lace Zizou's boots. Zidane was always in my eyes the best player in the world in his pomp, he was great to watch.
All in all thats just my opinion on Ribery, as you can see I dont like or rate him and wouldnt want him at Liverpool but thats just me, he may well come and set the premier league a light and my opinion of him might change.

Zidane himself is a fan of him anyway, said he should go to his ex club real madrid so if zidane rates him he can't be too bad. Probably won't go down as a player of zidane's quality but there's no doubt the guy is a quality player. Would love to see the look on the mancs faces if he did come to anfield after they couldn't sign him themselves...

Thats true enough alright! My friend has a signed shirt from him, its his prized possession! He used to work in Adidas in London & dealt with players from alot of the london clubs and the odd time met other footballers.

True.. t'is a pipe dream alright, but thinking about holding onto those players and having Ribery in the team for next season are happy thoughts!!
Theres no harm in that!

I think its quite obvious whats happened here. Bayarn came in for Voronin and Rafa said he'd only let him go if the deal included Ribery + cash. Rafa has believed for some time now that Ribery has the correct age, quality, mentality and character thats needed to take this team forward. This is clear no?

fantastic winger exactly what we need even if its just a pr stunt however would love to give him our number 7 shirt, but theres something fishy about this its very very similiar to city and robhino is there a takeover currently in the process with the deadline fast upon us, and since we are som broke can some1 tell me where is the money coming for new contracts,
i know im dreaming but its very nice been linked with the worlds best rather than second rate players: zenden, kewell, pennant, tugay etc

what the hell is going on today first ribery now sky have linked us to cambiasso next week i think will be a defining week from sky:
Skysports.com understands Liverpool are lining up a move for Inter Milan's Esteban Cambiasso in case they lose either Xabi Alonso or Javier Mascherano.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez is fighting to keep hold of midfield duo Alonso and Mascherano with the pair being strongly linked with moves to Spain.
Big-spending Real Madrid have openly declared their interest in Alonso, while Barcelona have refused to rule out a bid for Mascherano.
Benitez insists the pair will not be leaving Merseyside, but he is thought to be drawing up possible replacements in case he loses one or both of them with Cambiasso thought to be at the top of his wanted list.
Cambiasso has established himself as a key player for Inter since his arrival from Real Madrid in 2004 and Jose Mourinho would be loath to lose him.
Benitez is thought to be a big admirer of Cambiasso and could step up his interest if he loses either of his two midfield stars before the close of the transfer window.

Liverpool in shock bid for Ribery
Liverpool are set to make a shock move for Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery....
British bookmakers have today dramatically slashed the odds on Ribery moving to Anfield from 66/1 to 8/13.
This unusual transfer story has been backed up by similar betting cirumstances surrounding Michael Owen's shock move to Manchester United.
Reports from England have suggested that Reds manager Rafael Benitez will make a big-money offer to sign the highly sought-after French international.
Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona and Arsenal have all been linked with Ribery but so far Liverpool's name has never mentioned.
Bayern Munich have already stated Ribery is not for sale but the winger has already stated his desire to leave the German club.
This news will definitely raise doubts over the futures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano. In order to secure Ribery, Liverpool may have sell first before making this huge transfer outlay.
The Reds want to keep the pair, but their tight budget means Benitez - who has already splashed more than £17 million on Glen Johnson - will have to sell before making another big buy.
Speculation is that Liverpool could also put together a player-exchange deal involving Andreas Dossena, Andriy Voronin and Ryan Babel plus £25million cash.

[QUOTE=Niall;196740]already splashed more than £17 million on Glen Johnson /QUOTE]
Afaik it was only 10million because pompey owed money for crouchy, same incidence ith Robbie Keane going back to Spurs, we paid 3 million for a "loan" of him for 6 months,
So imo if he got £20m, - £10 for Johnson = £10 to spend, bye bye Andy Vorinin and Andy Dossena, which i reckon could get between 12 and 15m for them both(shocking i know:eek:) so the kitty is now back up to £22m,
If any of those players were to be bought by Munich they would be offset against Ribery if Benitez actually wanted him, so maybe Bye Bye to Babel and MAYBE someone like El Zhar aswell to Munich, and Lets not forget didnt Gillett sell his 70%+ share in his Hockey team for a reported £330m, maybe he decided to give Rafa some extra spending money this summer.
And so The RAFALUTION begins

Guy from sky bet said it was 12 punters caused the story.
Was 33/1 when 12 people put a few grand on, so sky bet reduced the odds after fear from taking another hit after owen to UTD.
The same 12 people bet again - odds reduced, bet again, odds reduced....
This game was played until these people stopped betting.
He said other people then got in the hope of making a few quid - hence the close book over potential fear of big loss.
Doesnt mean its a high possibility....Could be many reasons why the original punters placed the bets....To change the odds on behalf of another club possibly

Meanwhile, despite the surge of publicity surrounding an internet betting company, Liverpool are not in the running to sign Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery.
The firm in question had slashed their odds on £60m rated Ribery becoming a Reds player.
But Liverpool’s transfer budget is on a much more modest scale than those clubs who really are in the race for the Frenchman – who does not figure on Benitez’s summer shopping list.

Liverpool To Offer ₤20m For Ribery
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is reportedly preparing an ambitious bid for Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery…

Photo GalleryZoomFranck Ribery - Bayern Munich
Related LinksThe French international, widely tipped to star for Les Bleus at EURO 2008 next month, has catapulted himself to superstardom since his arrival in Bavaria last summer.
The 25-year-old journeyman is now recognised as one of the most dangerous wingers in the game, alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
His performances for Bayern have alerted some of the biggest clubs in Europe, and reports from Germany claim Liverpool will offer ₤20 million for the former Marseille man.
Benitez is keen to strengthen his attacking options over the summer, and has been monitoring a number of wide players, including La Liga stars Maxi Rodriguez and Albert Riera.
Ribery’s ability to play right across the pitch will no doubt attract the former Valencia boss, as will the Frenchman’s supreme understanding with Bayern hitman Luca Toni.
Benitez is planning to build a team around star striker Fernando Torres, and Ribery could prove a stunning addition alongside

Would be an incredible signing, Torres was the last signing that got me really excited, this would be easily on a par. I can't see it happening though. If we sign Ribery and keep Masch and Alonso then the 8/1 I got on the reds winning the league (from a Leeds fan) this season will be looking very good.

I seen dale tempest from skybet and he said they cut the ods from 66/1 to 33/1 after just £200 being bet on it in 30 mins by about a dozen people so must just be talkin of £10/£20 bets so I wouldnt be getting too excited. He then said each time they cut the odds the same people put more money on but I dont understand this! Why would the people with the so called information not put all the money on at the biggest odds the had at the beginning rather than wait for them to be cut before putting more on!Tempest said they are just afraid of being burnt like they did with michael owen whos odds were bet down from 20/1 but it just doesnt smell right to me!!

Rafa has one trick up his sleeve this summer, this could be it.
Without getting too carried away, he is a good player, but he is not proven at the top of club football though so still would be a risk. Short odds just means no-one wants to get stung if its true.
Hope its true and the price is right.

I dunno, there's probably nothing to it. But the odds are about 2/1 at the moment I think. They still havn't regulated. I suppose it cant be written off just yet for that reason. I have huge respect for TB, but I doubt he knows the clubs financial situation. It's a long shot to presume the club have about more than say ball park 20 - 25 Million sterling right now. Just Seen it there
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez does not expect to make any further signings for 'big, big money' after being linked with a bid for Franck Ribery.
Bayern Munich winger Ribery had been backed in to odds-on favouritism to join Liverpool following a summer of speculation over his future.
However, Benitez has seemingly ruled out a move for the France international, who has previously stated he would either stay at Bayern or join Real Madrid.
Having spent in the region of £17million to sign Glen Johnson from Portsmouth, Benitez is not planning any more major transfer deals.
"I will be really pleased if we can keep this squad together because I don't think we need to do too many things," said Benitez.
"I don't think we'll be signing anyone else for big, big money, just maybe the ones who can fit into our team.
"Right now we are just thinking of improving the fitness of the players, not thinking about the transfer market.
"We have the quality there and we will have our chances again."
Benitez's priority is trying to keep Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso at Anfield, with the midfield duo consistently linked with a move to Spain.
