I would recommend Seven Ages, an RTE documentary about the history and development of the Irish State.. Also documentary about Lemass starting on RTE 1 tonight, looks like it could be interesting. Probably the last Taoiseach we had with any real vision...

I thought the documentary called 'No end in sight' was brilliant. It's about how george dubya and his scumbag cronies completely fooked up the takeover in Iraq, it's told by the people who were there first trying to set things up after the invasion, riveting. 'Supersize Me' was good also the series that bloke did after that wasn't bad. Micheal Moores' first film 'Roger and Me' is excellently disturbing aswell.

I was talking over a couple of pints about how easy it is to set up a religion in the states. Jedi is a recognised religion after 40,000 signatures.

Does that mean we could make Liverpool FC a religion?!?

Excellent quality documentary of the infamous documentary between Martin Bashir and Micheal Jackson. Its a must watch and I personally think Bashir did a lot of damage to such a weak charachter. It has been said that it was this documentary that send him over the edge

Ever notice Martin Bashir has never been seen doing any documentary since. The guy ruined his own good name.

Just checked Wikipedia: Bashir is currently employed by ABC and co-presents their current affairs show 20/20. He also took over from Ted Koppel in 2005 following the famous news anchors final broadcast for Nightline, and had a small role as himself in the comedy film Mike Bassett: England Manager.

A few on here will remember this war kicking off in Chechnya... it started on new years eve in 1994. No one gave the Chechens a chance, but against all odds, they inflicted a demoralizing defeat on the Russian army. who then pulled out of chechnya in 1996.
Russia returned in 1999 under putin, still smarting from their earlier defeat, and accused the chechen rebels of bomb attacks in russia. what followed was a vicious, brutal, and no holds barred war of attrition, where Russian generals were quoted as telling the troops "there is no such thing as a chechen civilian". and the chechen rebels told to take no prisoners, and it ended up where men, women, children and the elderly were fair game for both sides.with thousands of civilians missing, and mass graves full of people still being uncovered this year.
This documentary is woth a look.

Saw a good doc on ITV3 on Monday night, first of 6 Martina Cole Ladykillers documentaries. First was about Myra Hindley, from growing up to her eventual joining up with Ian Brady & her dying in prison. Excellent stuff, she was an evil f*****g bitch. Next one is on Monday 9p.m. Still to come, Rosemary West, Beverley Allit, Elizabeth Bathory, Mary Ann Cotton, Amelia Dyer, check it out.

Just watched this very good documentary..... about an adventurer, who attempts to cross from Austrailia to New Zealand, by way of the treacheorus tasmin sea,in a kayak.
He brings his own video camera to make a dairy of his attempt.
with input from his wife, friends+supporters included also.
I wont say much about it.... but its well worth a look, and an hour you wont waste watching it.

Grizzly Man I think it was called. Pretty good alright.

Man On Wire was great. Its about a French fella who (illegally)tightrope walked between the twin towers. The story of how him and his team sneaked into the building with all their equipment and set up the rope is amazing.

Seen a few docs about Rev Jim Jones aswell which were very good but I cant remember the names.

Seen this documentary a few weeks ago..its part of the storyville series on bbc.
I was stunned after watching it.as it had a different concept to the usual docs;..it was a chilling account of his best friends life..and then his murder at the hands of his partner. but thats only half the story.

There are two young potential golf champions.... a young boxer...and also a tennis player...with their dads as gurus, how do the kids handle the stress and pressure?
In some cases..better than their parents!

Thanks Juan for posting this. I would never have known about this programme otherwise.

It was a great documentary about being 'scouse' and what that means. The protest scenes before the 'Porto' match in 2007 brought back some memories. I was there that night. It was as much 'Yanks Out' then as now.

Jegsy Dodd of 'Redmen on the drink' was interviewed as well for the bit on the club and the special flags at matches.

The other piece of the programme that I found very interesting was the scenes involving the pilot taking the massive container ship into Liverpool port. That job carries some responsibility.

Im looking for some help on this Documentary...its called "FIEL".
It was made by Corinthians FC in 2009...as a tribute to its fans, who stuck by the club during troubled times.
The club were relegated in 2007..but gained promotion back to the top flight the following year.Hence the tribute documentary.
Having done a search..i cant seem to find it with english subtitles.(maybe their isint one)
Maybe im searching in the wrong places...and would be greatful if somebody pointed me in the right direction. little clip from youtube.

Zidane!!!! Maniac

I love Zidane and looking back, I love that moment...
He was the best player in the world, he had just scored one of the best goals imo (to place that penalty as he did at 0-0 in a world cup final... unreal) but then he shows what matters to him most... his family.
Maybe if he had thicker skin, he could've led France to another WC victory and so many people would remember him differently.
But to me that moment defines him for all the right reasons.
TG4 showed a great docu about him awhile back and it shows how much he didn't care about fame, money, glamour... he didn't cheat or wind other players up... he just played...
Legend.

Messi's the only player at the moment that could possibly fill his boots imo

No idea tbh but you would never get bored of them, this one is on for 2 hrs

Double Cannes-winner Emir Kusturica's films is a portrait of one of football's most extraordinary characters. Diego Maradona - reviled in England (the Hand of God), adored in Argentina, where he won the World Cup as a player and has (at the time of writing) managed his team to the last eight in South Africa.

Kusturica enjoyed unlimited access to the man himself and traces his story from the humblest of beginnings to world domination, followed by his fall from grace through drug abuse and weight problems before rehabilitation and rebirth.

The result is an astonishing, personal story that is cemented by the strong personal bond between Kusturica and Maradona.

Will record it and watch at weekend

Seen it last night as well, brilliant documentary but it is really sad.

Video is on Youtube. Last nights programme included stuff not allowed in the original show. One of them was living with some guy from Cork and then the twin sister came to visit and they just disappeared. Next thing they went to Liverpool and took a bus to London and were thrown off by the driver on the way, then they ran in front off the traffic, one sister got arrested the other went to intensive care. Then when your one was released the next day she stabbed a local man to death, ran away and jumped off a 40 foot flyover broke 2 ankles and shattered her skull. The shrinks said the girl in intensive care was delusional and nuts and the twin got affected by it and acted in the same way. The court case was a nightmare for the judge as she was seen mad at the time but sane now and he ended up giving her 5 years.

i like watching a good documentary, generally war ones i sky plus them and watch them at my leisure and i can skip the ads too.i was dropping a mate to the airport this morning at five so when i got back ive just watched the man with 121 children and 24 wives,it was on discovery a few weeks back.it was very good about polygimist mormons and this one guy in canada that was up in court over being married many times.the strange thing is most mormons have stop having multiple wives and the way it was said in the programme it sounded like basically the founder of the church was caught cheating on his wife and made up the excuse "god said its ok"!!!

It's about the Iraq invasion but what makes it interesting is it's told from a soldiers point of view. A Marine brought a video camera with him during his tour and while some scenes are pretty graphic, I thought the most disturbing thing was the US Marines attitude.... "people are dying. It's fcukin awesome. This is the coolest thing ever"

I would've preferred to see more footage of their day to day lives on tour. Even showing more footage with a voiceover of them talking wouldve been more interesting. Close-ups of their usually blank, expressionless faces was a waste.

Great documentary about TK Whittaker on TG4, details below....

http://www.independent.ie/national-news/those-who-shouted-stop-were-ignored-whitaker-2473180.html

Mr Whitaker was also responsible for influencing the State's policy on the North -- urging former Taoiseach Jack Lynch not to send the army across the border at the beginning of the Troubles in 1969.

Although he has been described by historians as the outstanding public servant of his generation, he remains modest about his role.

The TG4 documentary 'TK Whitaker: Seribhiseach an Stait' (Servant of the State) will be broadcast at 8.15pm on Monday, December 27, 2010.

Its out on feb 9th on tg4. Who was that woman again in that clip on Prime Time. The one who was swearing all over the place. Strikes me as someone who will give one iota in terms of compromise.
Maybe thats not such a bad thing though given the politicians appalling record on corrib.
Was mentioned that a former minister had set up a body where Irish would work in conjunction with oil companies in terms of harnassing our local resources. But it was never followed up on.

Jesus Camp is a very good doc if you can find (download it) it about a summer camp that is run for Children who are Evangilists.

Might sound boring but is scary, it about training kids to effectively be Gods warriors, they believe in creationism, that science has 'ever proved anything' global warming is a political conspiracy basically berainwashing these kids.

At the camp they start off by saying that Harry Potter is a warlock and if he was around during the old testament hed be put to death.

Whats scary about it is that its just shy of a cult and their are 30m members in the US and their leader used to advise Bush and would speak to him once a week about US policy.

Even so, I thought it was very entertaining and its always good when a movie gets people to question their beliefs. yeah alot of errors in the first part especially with religion. but when talking about "facts" about someone who supposedly lived 2000 years ago who really knows? the 2nd one is more about the monetary system which ive tried explaining to people in other threads and solutions, the 3rd is more about human "nature" and society, the monetary system and how its designed to fail (again) and then more solutions. im not a fan of all the solutions suggested but it gets ya thinking for sure

Watched it myself last night thought it was very good. I think the whole purpose of the first film regardless of whether it was all true or not was to get people thinking on a different level which i think by the most part has worked. Either way the system they proclaim whether its achievable or not is worth a shot rather than dooming our grandchildren to worse times than the present day

Watched the documentary last night, & I've read the book too. Killing innocent protestants too simply because they THOUGHT they were catholic! Murphy's psychopathic hatred of catholics is also thought to stem from his own surname. Great read the book is, & definitely lots of unanswered questions.

http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/earthlings/

With an in-depth study into pet stores, puppy mills and animals shelters, as well as factory farms, the leather and fur trades, sports and entertainment industries, and finally the medical and scientific profession, EARTHLINGS uses hidden cameras and never before seen footage to chronicle the day-to-day practices of some of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit. Powerful, informative and thought-provoking, EARTHLINGS is by far the most comprehensive documentary ever produced on the correlation between nature, animals, and human economic interests. There are many worthy animal rights films available, but this one transcends the setting. EARTHLINGS cries to be seen. Highly recommended!

Good doc on tonight tg4 at half seven on the drimalogue teachers strike.
more info here
In March 1976 the quiet and peaceful life of the little village of Drimoleague in West Cork was shattered. Pickets were placed by teachers on the local national school; seven other schools in the parish initially went on strike in support of them. It was to become the longest school strike in the history of the State

The dispute was over the appointment of a school principal which divided the small community down the middle. The INTO claimed that the appointed teacher, Mr. Nicholas McCarthy was ineligible as he didn't have the full five years experience required under the rules. The most publicised alternative contestant for the job of principal happened to be an executive member of the INTO, local man Jimmy Collins. Central to the dispute was the local parish priest, Fr. John Crowley an ex army chaplain who had seen service in the Congo. , He was accused of sending a letter nominating Mr. McCarthy to the Dept of education while, at the same time, sending in a list of applicants. The newly appointed board of management made it clear from the outset that they were backing Nicholas McCarthy

The strike became extremely bitter and personalised. Matters went from bad to worse when Parents took over some of the classrooms and taught the pupils themselves, The INTO instructed other schools in the area not to enrol students from the striking schools The air was thick with accusations of harassment, intimidation and boycotting- The parents took their case to the high court where the Minister for education was forced to provide the children with free transport to alternative schools. Innumerable settlements efforts were made but negotiations constantly broke down
The strike was eventually settled after six years but a heavy price had been paid. Children had been left at the side of the road for a year and a half with no formal education. The wounds inflicted on this small community ran deep and to this day very few people are willing to talk about the strike. The INTO paid nearly a half million punts in strike pay and 2.4 million punts on court cases taken against them by students over a ten year period.

Thanks for the head's up on this. If it wasn't mentioned in this thread I would have totally missed this programme.

Just watched it tonight. It was full of some wonderfully nostalgic moments.

Learned a few things tonight, always knew that Beefy was non establishment and this this proved it.

I was absolutely amazed to find out that he is still married to his first wife. They got married when he was 20. A very patient woman I would guess.

Some great original commentary as well from John Arlott and Richie Benaud.

I also never knew about the extraordinary amounts of money he raised through his charity walks for Leukaemia charities.

Also noticed that Standard Chartered were a sponsor at Headingley cricket ground in 1981.

Watched Capitalism , a Love Story on more 4 last week. I was left thinking - if there really is a God how the fkuc does he allow this to go on with the amount of starving kids on the planet . Children dropping dead for the want of a cup of water and we allow this system or whatever you call it to actually blossom . There are times I really am stuck for the lack of ability to see the right in what the west adopted as a way to do business when same obviously has an in built mechanism to allow the wealthy to gather even more wealth off the backs of the working classes and the starving - and this wrongly and in broad daylight .
Capitalism sucks to high Heaven- I wonder ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, is God a capitalist ???.
