The new IPhone is out this week and thinking of getting one. I am with Vodafone for the last almost 10 years and thinking of a change as the mob has seen better days and none of the new nokias take my fancy. My Ipod Nano is full and digi camera is ancient, so could be a chance to upgrade three gadgets in one.

Anyone here have an I phone? what's the camera quality like and is it dear to surf the net if you are not connected to a hotspot?

If you're getting one then obviously get the new one; the iPhone 3GS. Details on the phone can he found here (http://www.apple.com/iphone/).

On your two questions, the camera is poor with the original iPhone, but the new one is an improvement and also has video capabilities which are surprisingly good. With regards data, as with any provider if you go above your limit you'll be raped (1GB limit). I usually just use mine at home over my wireless network so that way I'm not eating into my data limit. I've never gone over it.

All I can say is go for it. One of the best toys I've bought.

Yeah its defo the new model I would be looking at. Are the cumbersome to use and haul around though as opposed to your normal nokia?

I have a IPhone 3G since febuaray and only last week their was a software upgrade which enhanced the camera and pretty good quality now. Also good few extras, excellent in my opinion.

You need to get the 16 - 32Gb better memory and more storage space.

IPhone is excellent and the best purchase i've got in years. Has all you need and you can download applications to suit your needs etc,.

I'll put it this way. I always owned Nokias. I'm a software developer myself and found their os to be the easiest and most intuitive to use (a caveat on this would be that this is perhaps becoming less so over the years). Then I bought an iPhone.

Apple basically came along and seemed to ask the question - "Why do all current mobile phone designers do things this way?". And instead, they decided to do it their way. It's in a way a whole new type of os that in my opinion defines ease of use.

The missus still has a Nokia (an N95). Everytime she asks me to do something on it for her I die a small bit inside because I know I'll have to go through God knows how many menus to do something that is a couple of screen clicks on my iPhone.

The size isn't small, particularly with a cover. But it doesn't even slightly bother me. It's my phone, organiser, email, camera, iPod etc all in one so I'm not fussed!

I have literally become a tard using any other phone now. But don't take this the wrong way. I am interested in technology, so until there is actually a true iPhone "killer" on the market - my next phone will be an iPhone, the next one after that an iPhone, the next ...

Was surprised at this, didn't expect the camera to be improved (most issues are related to hardware, i.e. only 2 megapixies and lens issue). However it does appear there has been a slight improvement due to the software upgrade (primarily around image stabilisation and blur reduction).

I love the fact we can MMS now, plus copy and paste at long last! My biggest surprise was the stereo bluetooth; I don't need an aux-in cable to connect to my stereo anymore! :D

lol! Believe it or not I'd be more anti-Apple than anything (certainly before the iPhone came out anyway). I'm a Windows developer so I'm a PC/Microsoft man :)

The one thing that annoys me about Apple is the fact they're hardware isn't more "open", i.e. they always put restrictions in place to try and force you to buy other Apple products (i.e. songs from iTunes etc).

But I bloody love my iPhone ..... :D

Their were issues when i downloaded connecting to websites via safari but a call to apple sorted it! They said that a huge amount of people had same problem.

Image stability and blur reduction has made a big difference.
Voice memos also very handy! MMS is also cool if its not bad enough listening to her you now get a picture as well!!:D:D

I can only say yes. The UI is so straight forward mate. I'd recommend trying to get a play of one in a shop or something just to see for yourself. But seriously, while it's different to other phones it's good different - so much more user friendly!

He he :) Remember there are 10 free MMS messages a month from now on as well.

I got lucky, was still in work and done a final check to see if 3.0 was in. It was, and had no probs downloading (though probably at this stage not many people were using it). One of the lads in work came in the next morning asking did anyone have any problems with iTunes last night! He doesn't have an iPhone was just trying to download music :-) Apparently there were massive server load problems.

The other thing I like is the option to make SMS text now not visible on receiving one on standby. Was really annoying the way someone could pick up your phone and see part of the text of your SMS without you even having opened it.

Pity they still haven't added flash support though :(

There not rubbish, there is bluetooth on them, battery life is decent unless your watching movies on it the whole time. It has gps, camera ok not great.

I have the 3g one the new one is better, also there is over 25000 applications you can down load from apple for it, by far the best gadet on the market

Some of the apps for example i have are arunning tracker - this tracks my runs / cycles via the gps signal, displays it on a website - see here http://www.runkeeper.com/pub/act/RZOjSs3P1TA5EZ0nI61u

also there is applications to keep your golf scores, calculates your handicap and stableford scores etc.

aidan, have you not downloaded the new software upgrade 3.0 out since 17th
gives you loads extra, and enhances the camera a little and picture quality is very good now.

That other lad must have the first iPhone and I know that is shit! Friend has one and hates it. The iPhone 3g is the way to go 16-32gb

I got myself a 3GS the other day and I don't know how i got by without it. Best piece of kit i've ever bought. Also got a nice little €60 off the phone so it came to €129, no idea how that was the case but i didn't ask in the shop ;)

Its so so handy though, i'm out of office quite a bit so its great to be able to check my gmail regularly. I needed an iPod too so that was two birds.......

I don't know about the lite, but the missus got a tocco last year with vodafone (bill). Long story short she is with O2 now; months of grief and vodafone kept saying she had to send it back time and again (even tho each time it never worked - but they did offer a months free bill, which is very handy with a phone that doesn't work ).

Found it a grand looking phone besides (if it wasn't for the iPhone might have got the Omnia for Windows Mobile). Could be fine now, maybe that was just vodafone, not a clue - but all I know is the one she had was only good as a door stop.

Nightmare trying to get hold of the new iphone. Sold out these last few weeks, so went on a email list. Got an email from O2 saying all retail stores now had new stock. Went Blackrock next day and they had sold the TWO new ones they got. Went to Dundrum and they had sold out of the SEVEN new one they got. Your man in the shop reckoned they are thousands on the email list and supply cannot meet the demand.

Which iPod is it you have?
Some of the older ones have a disc mode which makes it easier to transfer music from the iPod to the computer without the need for iTunes.

Got my new I phone there today and i haven't put it down for a second yet, really is a class phone. Already had a I Touch but still got a lot of gadgets more to play around with.

Anyone have any idea if there is a way to text on the iphone like on a normal phone without using the qwerty keyboard, its something that will put years on my having to use all the time....especially if there's drink involved.

ye thats the one.

You have to use iTunes. And pull the music from the iPod to the iTunes library. Then you can take the music straight from the iTunes folder and do what you like with it. I cant specify where this folder is, as it is different for each computer, but you can do a search for itunes and it'll pop straight up. Hope this helps.

As far as I know you are stuck with the qwerty keyboard.
But you can mod the iPhone and do something like this----

iPhone is the best all-in gadget that you could ever have, great for iTunes (music, audiobooks, podcasts), iCal, e-mail, etc. etc. etc. syncs with my MacBookPro in work. Some of the apps are cool like HoldEm, WunderRadio, Dublin Bus, Sky Sport Score Centre and iBeer always gets a laugh ...... recently down loaded Sypic Europe (a sat-nav application) which is cool when traveling and doesn't require broadband connection. Not bad for making phone calls either.

The only downsides are;
- can never hear it rings in my pocket
- can't text for shit when drunk
- camera not much good on 'old' 3G model
- wi-fi needed for most apps and very expensive if you just use the 3G connection

Ive an iPhone (not the new one), work pays for the phone and the bill - and you know what - I dont think they are that great. Ive changed back to an N95. I orderd 7 in total and 3 arrived faulty, then Apple has the cheek to ask me for €27 EX VAT for an express repair or wait 10days for no fee.

I dont use it for multimedia, more like a blackberry so for text and email, getting used to the keyboard and 'fat fingering' the wrong keys all the time is a disaster. Long live Nokia!

I have a vodafone nokia 6300 and recently had an ipod touch 16Gb. I say recently because they don't survive a quick wash at 40 in the washing machine :( I'm looking for a 3gs but at £440 I think I'd be run out of town when I got back home! Plus the first thing I'd have to do is jailbreak it to work on the vodafone network and would be worried I'd end up with a £440 brick. I had talked myself out of getting an iPhone over the weekend but this thread has reignited my interest. Decisions decisions!!!!

Here's is a better alternative to the iPhone.
It has a better camera, better screen resolution, comes with a TV antenna so you can watch free TV wherever you go, has WiFi etc. anyway follow the link and see for yourself. It comes in black and white.
It works out at about €105 and the shipping is free.

I'd advise against getting any of those types of phones. Got one myself last year. All the specs are lies, cameras worse than what it says. Micriphone was too low when making calls. Basically it was aload of shite.
