we really need to come through the internationals with a clean bill of health and hit the blue noses hard

hopefully Alonso will be back to tidy up the midfield

I'd welcome Dagger back too - really suprised with both the spurs goals - Hypia been beaten to a header on both occasions.

What do you guys think about throwing Stevie out on the right (dropping pennant) and playing alonso and Masher in the middle ??

To be fair for all his pace problems Hyppia is commanding in the air so im 100% certain Agger wouldnt have done any better and the goals were conceeded because of Keane being lost in the box twice which wasnt Hyppias fault.

Id agree with your midfield selection, and you never know, the only thing we can be certain of with Rafa selections is that our team will never match his one that gets put out

agger takes the ball better and distributes it better than sami. that said sami has done well since he came in.

and yep time for stevie to hit the right midfield spot...the only problem would be alonsos match sharpness.

I agree with your comment - i wasn't slating Hypia
He commands the high balls in every game - but as i said i was suprised Berb beat him to both headers to set up Keane who did his usual trick against us.

Hyypia is superb when the ball is played in front of him which is why it was uncharacteristic that the 2 goals we conceded on sunday were they way they were. Thats why Rafa was so annoyed as he understands where Sami's strengths are.

As for the Everton game a must win. Good news that Alonso and the Dagger could be back. Major boost for us if that comes to fruition.

The problem with the spurs goals were that both balls were played towards Carragher, Hyppia moved across to head them and Robbie was left free. Carragher should have been going for both of those headers. Regardless of who won the headers the defending of the 2nd ball was awful

in fairness to Sami, Berbatov is a quality striker, very intelligent and good in the air, i'd question what Finnan and Carragher were at for the goals but you only have to think back to Goodison last year when the reliables had a 'mare but then went on a great run, our defence is quality and will be alright again, i predict we'll pip the Toffees 1-0 with a Fernando special :)

I think the return of alonso is great but will he last the full 90? Think gerrard had a bad game with engeeerland tonight..seems somewhat out of form.

Hopefully torres will be fit but non of that matters if we cant muster up a good performance in the cm area.

I'd say Rafa is gona play 4-5-1 saturday as the blueshite usually just come for a battle, Gerrard behind Torres could be the way to go with masch and alonso behind Babel and Yossi on the wings, saying that as much as I hope he plays masch is on his way back from south america so Rafa might leave him out with our trip to Turkey midweek.

Fernando Torres misses out on this afternoon's Merseyside derby at Goodison, with Andriy Voronin partnering Dirk Kuyt up front for Liverpool.
Neither Torres or Xabi Alonso are in the squad to face Everton at 12.45pm despite hopes earlier in the week they might be fit.

The team in full is:
Reina,
Riise, Finnan, Hyypia, Carragher,
Benayoun, Mascherano, Gerrard, Sissoko,
Voronin, Kuyt.

Subs: Itandje, Crouch, Pennant, Babel, Lucas.

Strange one, lets hope it pays off.

Rafa said the reason he took Gerrard off was because "we were playing with the Heart and sometimes you need to play with the Brain."
what the xxxx was Momo Sissoko playing with?how he lasted 85 Mins and Gerrard was taken off is beyond me.
i really like Rafa and don't want to say a bad Word about him but he was SO close to it today.
if Lpool had been 2-1 up when he took Gerrard off it would've been a massive gamble but to take him off at 1-1 when they're chasing a winner against 10 Men is playing Russian Roulette in my opinion........

Agree, big time ...

typical us at this time of year mind you, if you look back over the past 3-4 years we've always been poor around Sept-Oct time of year.

I can't understand how Rafa felt it was appropriate to take Gerard off, playing with his heart rather than his brain ? ... I'd have thought we'd want all our players playing with their hearts in a derby Rafa ?

And as for Sisoko .... bring on the January transfer window quick and lets be rid of him please.

Very happy to see neville sent off I must admit, serve him right for being a former Manc alone :D

I felt for poor old Sammy today, awful OG for him, particularly after he'd clearly been working very hard to get his place back with age now going against him, lack of pace etc. Sadly, this is the faith of all great players though, they get old and end up looking bad on occassion as a result of lack of pace etc, before eventually retiring. I'd say Sammy could be a great defender coach for us in years ahead.

2 well taken shots by Kuyt, have to say I was pleased with his confidence etc and particularly for a derby match to get 2 penos scored was great going. I seriously think some of us underrate this lad, I'm a fan !

think you have to put in context.

momo and masch in the as a cm pairing is pretty rigid..

I think rafa got in right in taking off gerrard, hes played two international games in quick succession and then has a derby match..

he also doesnt track back as much as the other two..it was a compromise and we got away with it in the end..but deservingly so. Think lucas looked good and composed and its a shame he didnt get his goal.

everton just blasted the ball long during the second half.

IMO..its a great result after a dreaded international break...

Garrett
20-10-2007, 02:23 PM
Hi mate,

While I agree with you about Lucas coming on looking good, Im sorry I can't agree with you on Sisoko, the guy has useless ball control, is a bad shot taker etc. Not LFC quality imho.

I've mixed views on the general arguement about resting players etc, personally I think they are on a high when they are playing well, winning matches etc and as such, keep playing well and don't need to be rested too often. Lets face it, the get paid a lot of dosh to be fit etc.

...Mind you, based on Rafa's comments I don't think this was the reason for Rafa substituting Gerard, I think Rafa felt Gerard was playing with too much emotion and perhaps was not focused on tactics enough or something. I'm not sure he was right, I'd feel in derby games you need emotion to be running high and Gerard is a game winner, someone we need on the pitch (certainly did today).

Anyway, in the end we've gotten away with it today, but I really feel we were lucky and relying on penos to win games is not the way to be going.... hence, I say we were lucky today, but I'm sure not complaining about it ;)

That was ridiculous.the space that the bluenoses gave us up front was unbelievable and no one up front had a clue.Kuyt runs his heart out but never will make a striker.everton were very poor thankfully.
i thought when he took of stevie that he must have another job lined up and was looking for the sack and some compo.
i cant make head nor tail of his decisions anymore.there is no improvement and pako or no pako we need a coach to get this team to play as a unit and not the shambles that we are currently watching.

would like to see the highlights to see everton's 2 shouts for peno's.looks like they were robbed tbh.did'nt like what stevie g done to get the lad sent off.and was it a peno.

personally i think we tried to get the ball down and play.broke down a little too easily in the final third tho after some decent approach play.game got a bit scrapy in the first half for about 15 mins.everton as usual looked dangerous from set peices and high balls into the box.

i actually trusted rafa when he took stevie g off.got a bit of a shock tbh but i gave him the benefit of the doubt.and if you analyise it,it allowed Mascherano to move into the middle and dictate the game from then on which he done imo.we showed some decent patience just did'nt take the chances we created which was a worry.what was sissoko up to with his effort.

anyways from 1-0 down at the half we will take it.and yes a vast improvement needed.:p

would Rafa have made that comment about playing with the Heart and not the Brain if they hadn't won?i don't think so.

Anyway cheer up a bit lads, we just beat the bitters, after an international break. Rewind 12 hours I'd say not 1 person on here would have complained about playing averagely and coming away with an injury-time winner.

hmmmm interesting reading on here.... a few dividing viewpoints.

personally, i was delighted to win - lucky or not but you gotta take the breaks as they come...

actually surprised that a reds fan would actually be disappointed with stevie reminding the ref that hibbert had to go.

as for the performance, i thought we were solid enough. lacked a little creativity in the first half (cannot wait for xabi to return)!! Sami was so unfortunate with the og.
was happy enough with the second half and created a lot of good opportunities. pity voronin had an off day. still think he shows more intelligence with his runs and play than kuyt.

as for the last minute pen call.... think it was but felt that lescott was too theatrical.

looking forward to the arsenal game - confidence should be up and with the torres and xabi back its looking good.

I can't understand all this negativity about the performance. I mean really. We got three points and didn't play very well. How is it when other title contenders don't play well and win it's a sign of a "winning" team. As I said, we didn't play to our best but we still got three points (penalties or not it's still a win) so why all the negativity? We should be supporting our lads not ridiculing them. It's obvious we had our confidence hit for the last few games but I think this is just what we need to get back on track. As for Gerrard coming off, it's like what Andy Grey said in commentary, Rafa left the door wide open for major criticism by taking Gerrard off. I respect his decision to take him off. It was a gutsy move. I honestly can't think of any other manager that would have the nuts to do that in a derby game. We still won the game so power to you Rafa.

On a side note, I just loved Carras celebration. T'was great to see that kind of emotion from him after the torrid game he had last season. If anybody deserved to be on the winning side it was him (and Hyypia. He's getting to much negative press about his lack of pace for my liking).

No I am the same,we need a major improvement to even keep in touch at the top never mind win it outright.

Just take every game as it comes. 3 points was vital, 3 points is what we got. We will improve..

oh and highly rate lucas. has great composure and really gets around the pitch!

Got to agree with you there - he plays the simple ball and also looks to have an eye for the killer pass.

I was gutted his shot didn't go in at the end - a last minute goal would have done wonders for his confidence and he could really start pushing for a place in the team.

not a great preformance but if u said to me before the game we would win 2:1 against the blue noses in goodison i would have taken it .
at the end of the day the 3 points was the most important thing and thats wat we got

Think saturdays win was partly down to luck if they had of been given the penalty in the last minute of overtime we couldve drawn only but LUCKILY they didnt.
Still cant beleive momo was left on for so long he hasnt got the pace and half the time he messes up his passes, gerrad really seemed to be getting into the game just before rafa takes him off.
We gotta start playing alot better up front, we couldnt finish things off really missed torres hes always right in the middle for crosses and corners. fingers crossed all are back and well for wed and esp for sunday.
All in all tho we got 3 points so happy days bout that :)

True but let's be honest, we only saw more of Gerrard after the first red card.

agree with u totally it was like he suddenly really wanted to win the game, instead of getting a usual draw

Yarp. I thought he was very ordinary until the red card. This substitution might actually help his form in my opinion. If we can win a game of this magnitude without him he may think "wow, I really need to up my game after this". Again, I think it was a great move by Rafa.

I beg to differ. As always Andy Gray & Co. and even the beeb tried to stir-up the whole Gerrard substitution.

Fact is aside from being faster than Hibbert on one counter attack he did nothing besides give the ball away and unbalance the team by wandering around whereever he wanted.

I think its great that Rafa is not afraid to substituted any player at any time,a lot of lesser managers would not have even remotely considered making such a move.

Not the first time we've won the derby with himself off the pitch is it?

No it's not but what I'm saying is it might get him (Gerrard) thinking and we may finally see the best of him this season. It might be the kick up the backside he needs. He's not been up to his best at all this season.

If Liverpool are going to win the title, they will need some luck along the way. Should never had got to that late to score a winner and shouldn't have needed to have an extra man either. Should have been one up from the 4th minute. Creating plenty of chances but not taken them. I don't know the stats but reckon have a low percentage of genuine chances converted.

What a win. These are the games we have to come away with 3 points to become serious challengers. Rafa is an abolute genious. He had me swearing blindly when he took off Stevie, I couldn't understand it for the life of me. But now in hindsight it was the right move as it balanced the team more and took maximum advantage of having the extra man, by stretching Everton with our passing from wing to wing. That's why he's the top manager in the world he has a total football brain and is so quick to spot things like this.

As for the ref whats the point in getting involved in these debates any more, over the course of the season it evens itself out, they are only human. Swings and roundabous

Bring on Besitkas and Gunners

Was anyone else a bit dissapointed at Gerrard going down like a sack of spuds at the slightest of touches instead of smashing the ball into the back of the net? He did the exact same thing in Istanbul and it annoyed me to see him do it again. Surely he should have the confidence to go for goal and uphold his legendary status instead of bottling it, looking for a penalty and letting someone else take it. On Saturday he tried and succeded to get Hibbert sent off and I can never condone a player doing this. Hibbert barely tugged his shirt (hardly what you would call 'denying a goalscoring chance') and Stevie dropped to the floor just like Drogba, Ronaldo and the rest of those muppets would do. I would have loved to see him blast the ball home after that run and prove his class. Instead he looked for the easy way out and looked like just another prem player.

Nope.

Would you rather we lost one nil ans was the score at the time?

And it WAS a penalty (well, not really as it all started outside the box in my opinion). He was clipped as well as getting his shirt tugged.

By the by, the ref won't be reffing a game this weekend after that performance. Bless him. He deserves a weekend off

It was definitely a penalty. Stevie G was going full tilt and Hibbert didn't clip his heels, he put his knee into Gerrard's thigh which is a defender's trick and a professional foul. He knew exactly what he was doing and should've been sent off.

At the time when Gerrard was substituted I was going nuts too, but not because I think Gerrard has a divine right to stay on the pitch but because we were a man up and we left two defensive midfielders on the pitch. He could still have brought Lucas on without taking Gerrard off. But we got the result which is the main thing. ;)

Nice picture:DDelighted with yesterdays result.Team played rubbish but we are unbeaten and only 6 points off the top:)so you know what they say about championship winning teams playing badly and winning.Papers are full of doom and gloom about Rafa today as usual. Now murren is gone from Chelsea they will hound him until we prove them wrong and win the league.Beggers belief really.Makes 3 subs yesterday Babel, pennent and lucas and lord and behold babel passes to pennent then to lucas and he would of scored if not for neville southall(phil neville) fantastic save.Funny how the papers and T.V . left that out of there reports.Best thing of all is with the injurys we have we are still in touch with the leaders.I for one have questioned rafa's tactics in the past but the man has said all year that if we are in touch by the new year then we are in with a shout.Lets not forget that his game was an early kick off after an international break which we have usually lost in the past.Momo apart i think he got it right yesterday despite everybody getting in a huff over the gerrard subbing.Gerrard is NOT bigger than the club.Role on Arsenal

Spot on! Could you imagine Andy Gray if Slur Alex has made those subs.
