Gerrard could quit in 2013 Reds skipper looks to the future Steven Gerrard has admitted that he could retire at the end of his current contract, which runs until 2013. The Liverpool skipper will be 33-years-old by then and accepts that he may decide to hang up his boots. The England international claims he will take great pride from the fact that, should he call time on his illustrious career at that juncture, he will have spent his entire career at Anfield. Gerrard was a boyhood Liverpool fan and has become the heartbeat of the Merseyside outfit over the years. He has revealed that he came close to leaving the club when Chelsea came calling in 2005, but is delighted to have remained loyal to his roots. "I will be 33 at the end of my contract in 2013 and I don't know if I will go any further," Gerrard told France Football. "If I do retire, then I will know that from the start to the end of my career I only had one club. And I don't want to think about wearing any other shirt in the future. "I was close to leaving in the past, maybe twice, most notably in 2005. That year we (Liverpool) were a long way off the Premier League title and Chelsea's interest turned my head. "It was a difficult moment for me. However, now when I look back I am very happy that I chose to stay here. It has given me real pride." Improved Liverpool fell narrowly short in their efforts to land the Premier League crown last term and were pipped at the post by North West rivals Manchester United. However, Gerrard believes the club are heading in the right direction and is backing the Reds to be a stronger force in the 2009/10 campaign. "I believe the experience of defeat that we felt last season will be useful to us next term," he added. "The team has greatly improved over the last year or so. Today we are much closer to winning the title than we have been in the past. "Manchester United's squad is deeper than ours, we know that, and we have to be realistic. "But if we can add two or three quality players to what we already have, we will be at their level. The summer reinforcements will be essential.
Can't pay him a bigger compliment. Let's hope he has 2 or 3 PL title medals before age catches up on him.
I certainly hope your right, if anyone deserves a league winner's medal it's him. A phenomenal player and probably the greatest we've ever had imo.
Hopefully he goes broke and will have to negotiate a 5 year bumper extension, if sheringham can do it Stevie can, he has 2-3 prime years ahead of him, I can see him becoming an out and out striker before he retiers. Wasn't around for the King, Carra is class, Fowler will always be god, Sami a legend but this man is in a bracket of his own. He is the best we've had in recent years and will go down of our greatest ever. Too many take him for granted while we have him.
HE wont retire then, didnt Rafa tell him to cut out a lot of the pointless running so he could extend his career well into the 30's. Untill thing that may make him retire is a serious of injurys , but i think the lad is in great shape and will be itching for more games come 2013
The day Stevie retires will be a very very sad day.... One of our greatest ever, and I hope this day is a long ways off..
I reckon he'll play longer than that myself.Maybe in a different position though. Can remember a Zidane charity game a few years ago with world class players on both sides.Stevie played centre half and he was immense.I remember the commentators saying that he can easily drop back and play there in his 30's when he hasnt quite got the engine to be our driving force any more.Natural footballer and a great athlete. He'll play til 35 ish imo.
Nonsense if ya ask me, reckon Stevie will be carried outta Anfield in a box. Retire from international duty early maybe, but Liverpool, cant see it to be honest.
Wasn't this all taken from some interview he gave to a french newspaper? I reckon some things got lost in translation cause I don't believe stevie has any eyes on retirement just yet.
