From the Times Portsmouth accept Liverpool bid for Glen Johnson Window watch: England right back could be on his way to Anfield after South Coast club accept £18.5 million offer Gary Jacob, James Ducker Liverpool had an offer of about £18.5 million for Glen Johnson accepted last night. The successful bid comes after they struggled to raise the money to buy him when he was valued at about £8.5 million in January. The Portsmouth and England right back subsequently signed a new four-year contract, but his future club appears clearer with Chelsea unwilling to match the fee for a player they sold for £4 million two years ago. Manchester City expressed an interest, but have not matched the price, which will include add-ons. Liverpool will raise funds from the potential sales of Ãlvaro Arbeloa and Andrea Dossena and from outstanding money that they are owed from the sale of Peter Crouch to Portsmouth for £11 million a year ago. The Anfield club have expressed an interest in Micah Richards, the Manchester City defender. Wow!
Amazing. I have my dobts he is worth that. Expensive if it goes tits up. That said he was the best right back by a mile last year. I never ratewd that Boswinga chap and chelsea pain 16.5 for him, so I guess thats the level you have to aim at
cant believe we are paying that much for him...how much better is he going to be than arbeloa?? i really think the money could be spent better elsewhere....we are crying out for wingers and a striker at the minute... at least we know we have money to spend
No full back is worth that imo. That said,it seems to be the going rate for a top defender these days so I wont be complaining if hes the difference in winning number 19!
Ive seen threads and posts here in the past complainin that we aint paying top price for top players like the mancs and then when it happens we complain. IMO a defender is just as important as a striker and you should be looking to pay big for an international regular who last season was the best in the league.
Ficto Facto a young lad with alot of pace and can swing in some killer balls is just what we need on that right hand side. Him and Dirk will tear defences apart.
Jesus thats a price tag for someone worth 8.5 last season. That in my view is a crazy price for a defender.
This is up there with the Keane signing last summer - people will say its worth it because its the final piece of the jig saw. Its not! This is a crazy, stupid, annoying amount of money to spend on a right back. Surely there are cheaper options around, the german Friedrich springs to mind. I really hope this deal falls through, or that he moves elsewhere. I am all for big money moves, but only when they make sense!
What doesnt make sense? They owe us for crouch. Take whatever they owe us off that and we pay them the rest. Not a bad deal. The way things are going any half decent player is gonna be 15 mil tops. Unless you wanna sign a heap of voronins, and I know there is a few gems there for cheap but thats what scouts are for. For a well known player who is half decent in any given position will be minimum 15 mil
£18.5 mill including add ons. They owe us £7 mill for Crouchie. So that could be nothing upfront (writting off that £7 mill), £7.5 mill over 3 years, £2 mill for winning the league and £2 mill for winning the CL. All makes a difference like.
there is no difference in us paying 18m for this lad or paying 14m and telling them to keep the 4m that they owe us its still 18m regardless
